wouldn't touch them with a barge pole myself...........almost every one that has been released can be bought from another kit manufacturer for a quarter the price...........

Would you pay £700, £1000, for one of these kits as that's about what you'll end up paying in for them in  weekly parts in the end  and lots don't run to the last issues so you end up with only 3/4 of the parts like Neil says I would  keep well away

I've never built one but they work out to be far too expensive for my budget. As Neil pointed out they are often available from another manufacturer in kit form for much less money.

I made the mistake of making a subaru rc car when it came out on magazine. Cost a ruddy fortune but was young and seemed like a good idea. Ended up giving it away to some as present. Learnt my lesson. Just buy outright.

As most have said far too expensive, they did a Spitfire not long ago I worked out it would cost in the region of £800 and take two years to get all the parts, that's if it ran the course, a kit would be a fraction of the price and you get all the parts then and there,

I've completed about 3 or 4 over the years.
Deeagostini rc spitfire
Hachette O gauge flying Scotsman
Deagostini victory
And currently collecting the 1:7 red bull Rb7 rc car & black pearl

I agree they are expensive but I find a few mag subscriptions are easier to get past the wife lol
Also the content of the magazines can make for interesting reading.

lots don't run to the last issues so you end up with only 3/4 of the parts

There is no doubt that they are an expensive way of buying the kit but it does offer an affordable/acceptable way for many who couldn't otherwise consider getting it.

Talking to a newsagent at the time the HOOD one started with DeAgostini, he said the rule of thumb was that such series usually were tried for 6 issues and abandoned then or seen through to completion.  As it happened, that was how it turned out and HOOD eventually was done by Hachette (different kit).  DeAgostini  didn't charge for the bits it sent and refunded the first two or so issues I had bought before subscribing.  I would suspect that the publisher would be legally obliged to refund the subscribers outlay if it decided to stop the series before completion.  Running on for 3/4 of the series then stopping sounds unlikely - have you any examples of this?

The cheaper way to do these is wait until the series finishes and just buy a complete set from Ebay - for a tiny fraction of the original price (I almost bought the entire Titanic set for under £100 but instead bought a nicely built one for under £50)

There is a build of the Hood on here,I believe by our lord and master and chief Mod,him of the bright shirt? So he would be a good one to ask.I signed up for the Hachette Hood, and apart from 1 glitch when there was a stoppage in production, and I applied to the firm direct,I have had no problem with them.I have about 6 to go to complete the set,and They are all unopened and in mint condition. From what I have seen, and heard from a pal, they are but as we all know,a very expensive item to buy,but spread over the months it works out far easier on the bank balance, and er indoors never realises the full cost.

If you are buying a complete set on e-bay bear in mind that if the issues are still sealed then the contents won't necessarily have been checked.  I had to get replacements for two issues sent to me because of damage to parts.  A better bet almost is one where each issue has been opened, checked and labelled and stored in boxes - that way there is less damage to PE frets and the overall weight and size of the kit can be reduced - especially if you don't want the "magazine" sections.

I think all the potential disadvantages have been covered.

Only a few of the advantages have been covered.
Outlay is an affordable amount per month for those on low income or those who get pocket money (mentioned).
You get all the added reading materials (mentioned).

Those new to modelling are often overwhelmed by more difficult kits, and these kits are often left unfinished, and the modeller never tries again.
With part works, there is never enough at any one time to overwhelm. There is lots of step by step basic instruction, which can be vital totally new ideas to the newbie; although it may seem unnecessary to more experienced modellers. Only getting a little bit at a time, newbies build skills and confidence, and are often hungry for the next issue.
For her indoors, the kitchen table is only lost for a couple of hours a month.

There are also people who love collecting part works. Who may or may not actually assemble the model.

In summary. Part works, may be really useful to newbies, especially those on a tight budget, or those who like collecting. For experienced modellers, they are less attractive due to cost and the time involved in completing them.

I recently saw an O gauge model of the Loco Flying Scotsman that was a 'part-work', I was horrified, I imagine the parts were designed by someone who'd no idea what the real one looked like, a complete rip-off.

I recently saw an advert on the TV for a large scale Lamborghini Countach. That's nice I thought, spread the cost and end up with a nice model at the end.
Looked at the web page though and £50 a month for two years. That's £1200! Not sure if this kit is available elsewhere but would be interesting to compare prices.

The Lamborghini is an impressive looking model, but a heck of a commitment if even one pack doesn't arrive for whatever reason, and at £1200 I can see why they market it in monthly parts, I can't see it selling as a complete kit at that price  %%
