Features aboard HMS Adamant (1911)
« on: February 18, 2015, 10:17:01 pm »

Hi everyone

I've posted this to ask for some help in identifying certain bits and pieces fitted to this submarine tender. The vessel in question is HMS Adamant built in 1911 and me and my Dad have had a liking for this vessel for a few years but could never get anything to identify what was carried on the quarter deck, this is one of the clearest pictures we have ever found... any ideas :-))

Is it worth sending a letter to NMM or Chaham? If they have a model, this might help you identify the details.

The large derrick and the bench like thing alongside the railings feel like they are there to handle torpedos amongst other things, so perhaps thinking along the lines of torpedoes and their handling equipment?? If you can find images of such accoutrments, then maybe you can cross identify similar shapes on the quarter deck.

You may or may not have seen this picture.  It show Adamant loading torpedos from the quarterdeck.  I got it from this site.

I reckon you will have a long period of detailing as that ship looks positivly packed with fittings and equipment. It will be a splendid ship when completed though.

Sorry for the lateness of my reply Ian and tailuk

Thanks for the picture Tailuk, I haven't seen that one before I'm looking forward to going through the site you've linked. :-))

I've already got plans from NMM but the ones I've got do not show the details on the quarter deck, we've had our eyes on this ship for a few years but on deck photos are certainly a rarity. We've even tried her close sister HMS Alecto and managed to get a close up of the hull but nothing on top. Apparently there was a 4 inch gun fitted during the war but we haven't been able to see where it was fitted.

She's an interesting looking vessel, a cross between a tender and a posh yacht.
