Anchor for sailing trawler
« on: November 22, 2014, 03:17:44 pm »

Hi

I am detailing a sailing trawler that I have been building for a long time but I can find no details of anchor size.
I have looked through loads of google images without success. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks
Richard

I don't know the answer but can suggest a few ideas.

Anchor size is related to the size of the vessel, and shape is affected by period. If you can find pictures of similar tonnage working vessels from the same period, that should give you some idea.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Brian B6 or Hammer will probably have an answer.
Whatever scale you are using, comparing to a crew member of normal stature
should give you the size you need.

It really depends on what era you are modelling. Take a look at post 274 onwards for a detail of my anchor on the following topic.

http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,46369.250.html

For the most part from around 1800 up to the 1920's sailing trawlers had kedge anchors, and as they were stored inboard usually strapped to the port rail, they had to be manhandled overboard. So for the most part they were not to large or heavy that two men couldn't physically lift it over the rail.

A few posts later on in my build you will see the scale of it compared to a figure, this model was built to 1/48th scale, so I made the thing, but any kedge anchor that is commercially available and fits somewhere close to your model would be ok. Remember back at the turn of the century any ironwork was made by the blacksmith of the shipyard or in the near locale, so differences in size shape would creep in.

If its a sailing craft after this date then  you will have to do some deep research to find out!

Richard. As the name implies a Fisherman's anchor is the type with a folding stock. Will take a photo later out to night.

Here is my anchor on the Albatross of Lowestoft. Just like Brian's on his model. I do have an advantage in I only live 16 miles from Brixham, there are always a restored trawler at the heritage pontoon.
