Maggie M lights
« on: December 09, 2014, 12:43:36 pm »

Hi Chaps
I wonder if anyone could help me please. I bought a Maggie M fishing boat from my friend but have no plans or instructions. I want to put working lights on it but unsure of the colours to go on the mast and on top of the wheelhouse. Could anyone help me please.

Many thanks
Nick

White on the mast,     green on the starboard/right,   red on the port/left.  Easy way to remember, left has 4 letters,  port has 4 letters and port is red (the drinking kind).  %%

Fishing boats have an all round green on the mast.
Plus other lights depending on the type of fishing.
Not just as Joe has stated

Will try and put up the correct answer when I get home.

Navlights for all craft. I think if you search for it on youtube there is also an animated version for each craft. On this list, fishing boats are about half way down.....

Maggie M was engaged in trawling therefore would have a green light and a white light one above the other as a fishing signal if engaged in seine net fishing it would be red and white   red and white is also used when a pilot is aboard but reversed from seine net signal

Ho Ho Captain  {-) ...an alternate to this is

starboard has nine letters, right has five letters ..... green has five letters

port has four letters.......left also has four letters .......red has three letters

So a simple mathematical notation solves our question  O0

9x5x5 = 225
4x4x3 = 48

225 is a bigger number than 48
starboard is a bigger word than port >>:-(

Now the difficult point of understanding is that starboard is a derivate of larboard .......from memory larboard was the outboard or opposite side of the vessel to that as moored to the wharf or bank.................from this we deduce that vessels were moored on the opposite side which is the port side

Well .....that's how we did it on our way from the London docks to OZ in the first Fleet.......... {-) ... Derek

Starboard comes from steering board when vessels were steered by an oar
over the right quarter.
Larboard probably comes from ladder or laden which would be the side alongside
the Dock so the steering oar was not damaged coming alongside.
In a Gale Starboard and Larboard sounded the same when orders were shouted
so the larboard became port.

Red Port is best left alone.
