And it seems cheap enough for parts too! What I didn't see are any of the programming bits to actually control it, but I've only scanned it quickly for now, there may be other links I missed on first viewing..............

They're using a parallel-port stepper control board, link is on page "Steg 4". And they suggest Mach3 as control software.
3D printing controlers would be suitable too (G-CODE too).
