Maritime Protection?
« on: December 10, 2014, 10:36:35 am »

http://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/britain-forced-to-ask-nato-to-track-russian-submarine-in-scottish-waters/ar-BBgzuF4?ocid=iehp

Aircraft Carriers without aircraft, escorts or crews, more admirals than ships and an island without maritime patrols. Never mind; the grateful taxpayer is funding a a shiny new naval base out East to keep the aspidistra flying. Perhaps the berths can be let to cruise ships?

Hi barry.
The yanks built the mina salman facility four years ago, the bahrain govt is paying the cost of building the base, we are just paying the ground rent and running costs.

As far as idiot politicians go imaging buying a brand new unproven fighter wot a bunch of merchant bankers.  if they were going to buy foreign should have bought the Hornet at least it works.

"Just" paying the ground rent and running costs? Trillions in debt - and rising - every day and we need this base for - what? And for why?

hi Barry.
"back in the day" bases in the "Gulf" were to protect our supply of the "black gold" now its to have a steppingstone to counter the
Mad Bad Jihad Sqaad.   As in the S`lant having a ship based there permenantly means it only has to come home for a refit and the RAF
fly the crew change overs,  saves on fuel and time not having to go from  pompey and back for a cruise round the gulf.
All the kit they brought back from the "Stan" could be recycled to go out there it already the right colour.

I'm not sure how the RN's minimal strength can seriously affect anything 'out there' but the original reason for posting was the total lack of UK maritime patrols. I'm surprised it hasn't attracted more comment in the Press let alone Mayhem.

Unfortunately, it is that sad state of affairs Russia is probing for when it
sends its forces out on "training missions".  This last year, we have had
Russian fighter and bomber flights into Alaskan airspace, and after refueling, a
portion of them flew as far South as San Diego, California, a major Naval base.
I understand that Sweden has been intercepting Russian aircraft also.
To hear that they are testing the "waters" in this manner, is a bit un-nerving.

It feels so "Cold War" like, that it is really not funny.

I took a Portsmouth Harbour boat tour last week. There were just two Daring class alongside and one of those was having work done on it. Nothing else in sight except Illustrious laid up in the inner basin ready for scrapping.  :((
