Model Tug forum?
« on: December 10, 2014, 05:41:25 pm »

Just tried to access the site and this is what I got.....

NOTICE: This domain name expired on 09/12/2014 and is pending renewal or deletion.Renew it now!

Hope not it wasn't a heavily used site but did have some good stuff going for it.

Yes, but not long ago it was mentioned that it might be going I thought due to costs.

Just remembered it was NOT the Tug forum with  running issues but Paddle Ducks...  So probably just a tec issue..

As regards costs, the basics are cheap its the space required Photos etc. where the costs are accrued

Yes you can link your photos from photo sites etc but when people leave, accounts are deleted so are the pictures and it makes threads look daft. Forums where pictures can be posted direct are the best in my view, but this does take up space, on here I think it is now 220kb which is more than ample for a good picture..

The tug site, Paddle Ducks, MB,  the Warship forums all have a place as does Mayhem

Not being an internet guru, is it a major expense to run a forum? I mean, apart from paying for the domain name, what costs are incurred?

A domain name and basic hosting can be under £100 per year. Forum software can be free: but running a forum, editing, personalising and moderating it costs a pile of time. We should be thankful for what we have here: a mass of data from over the years, produced by an enormous amount of experts, and all for just about nothing.

Thanks for clearing that up for me Andy.

I'm certainly thankful for what forum owners do for us all, it makes our hobbies much more sociable, helpful and fun too.

Agreed. I always enjoyed the Tug Forum with its international flavour- in particular the long running thread on NW US/Canada Logging tugs. It is very sad when we lose any resource.

I wonder where the Tug Forum posters will go now.

As one of the Moderators on the Model Tug a Forum, I have to say that I am left somewhat in the dark about this. I do know that the owner has had some problems of late and has not been active on the site for some time.
Sadly, if I had to guess, I would say that the end has come! I do hope I am wrong and I will let you all know as soon as I hear anything.

cheers Barry, and thanks.........don't get on as much as I have been in the past, as am not building a tug at present, but would certainly know where to go when such knowledge was needed,............a great site I have to say and so very knowledgeable people on there for a specific type of boat, and contrary to certain views IT WILL BE MISSED.

I Did offer to host The Model Tug forum here on Mayhem a while ago when they had other issues but nothing ever came of it.....  {:-{

Hope they are back up and running soon.

Websites and Forum are usually 'Hosted' on "Big Boy" computers, usually air-conditioned warehouses full of computers,
'hard wired' to the internet. Obliviously you have to pay them for this privilege and the more reliable companies want
£100s of pounds a year.

Yes, the tug forum is back up and running. A slight admin problem caused the problem, so for those who want to, enjoy the site. For those that don't, you are also welcome  O0
