How to bring back detail on a model
« on: December 10, 2014, 07:04:21 pm »

Hi, I'm building a Revell 1/350 USS Wasp LHD for conversion to r/c. I'm turning it into a hospital ship and the overall colour scheme will be white, lots of white. I don't have an airbrush and have used Halfords white undercoat for the superstructure.
I put the first coat thin coat on tonight and all the detail disappeared.
So here's my question before I try - If I lightly rub a graphite pencil over the detail I want to bring back such as doors & pipework etc, will the graphite react badly to a top coat of satin model varnish?
The graphite pencil is just an idea.
Thanks for your opinions or guidance.

The armour guys use thin paint washes to highlight detail.  There are several tutorial videos on Utube which might prove interesting. Another option might be weathering powders, also on Utube.

The graphite pencil technique is one option, but wait until youve finished painting, then seal it all in with a varnish coat before applying the pencil. You can also use washes of various types as mentioned above, thinned acrylic paint, specialist washes, ink washes etc, all onto a coat of varnish (you can then wipe it off it its too much) and sealed with another coat of varnish after. Also as tailuk says, lots of videos on youtube relating to plastic vehicle/aircraft modelling.
