Mike Hawthorn Le Mans 1956 Jaguar D-type
« on: December 15, 2014, 12:30:29 pm »

A friend has just sent me this:

  https://vimeo.com/59410466#at=3D0

I think this must have been the pre-event testing weekend. The car is apparently a hack - a works car for 1956 would have had a full-width cockpit and screen and a tail fin. And look at the size of that film and recording equipment! Wonderful stuff all the same.

Sorry, mods, meant to put this in Chit-chat.

what a great piece of classic film.

I have a Mercedes 1/25th die cast model from the same era (modern repro) this one however carries the number of one of the UK's greatest racing drivers- sir Stirling Moss.....

Abfab, in 1969 I took my 1959 Mk3 Standard Vanguard Vignale estate down the Mulsanne strait at well over 70, helped a lot by the road surface which was a smooth as a billiard table, and in complete contrast to the normal surface at that time.

Moss liked the number 7 but in this case the number on the Mille Miglia Mercedes indicates the start time , 7.22 am.  The cars departed at intervals for the 1000 mile classic. Moss and navigator Jenkinson tried to average 100mph on the great road race, just missed by a whisker.  Model is 1:18 scale metal kit by Revell.
