WW2 Armed River Patrol Dingy
« on: November 18, 2014, 12:04:20 pm »

The hull for my winter project (not a Sturmboote) has just arrived. Huge thanks to Debbie and Andy at Models By Design, it's a cracking moulding, and has a little more room than the Long Tail boat...in fact, the Long Tail fits inside it nicely.

I think I'll have fun with this...but I have an idea that the outboard isn't going to be big enough   :o   I'm thinking an inboard motor may be needed.

Plane? It'll be out of the water like an offshore racer by the time I'm through with it!

Hi Rich.
if you want to have it out of the wasser all you need is  Brünnhilde in the stern.  {-)

Gawden Bennett, Frank...if she got in the boat, the boat would get out of the lake! Wouldn't need heavy artillery....

It's not the power I'm lacking, they all seem to be too short. For instance, the ones I have are nowhere near the water level when hung on the transom. I was thinking of using one as a rudder, but without major surgery to the motor, that won't work.

I did see, many years ago, a magazine article of a mini speedboat.  The writer had used a conventional inboard, but had disguised the steering servo as an outboard.  The servo horn was fixed to the transom, the servo was the swiveling part, and had the rudder attached to it.

I'm thinking of lowering the transom a bit, but I'm not sure yet...when I built my little fishing dingy many moons ago I did that, and it worked fine...until I went astern. Then the water tended to flood over the transom, same problem as the Long Tail suffers from.

Failing that, I'll sit and fathom out how to build a transom mounted rudder, along the lines of those fancy open steam launches...that may well be an easier way out.

That's about 1/2" shorter that the ones I have, Frank...shame.

I think I'll be going with a conventional rudder set up, with a bit of luck and a following wind, I can squeeze one in the space available. It'll mean having a disc on the shaft as there's not room for a conventional tiller arm, but that's not a problem.
Trying to hide everything in an open boat is certainly fun and games...I've just ordered 1000 x 7" wooden coffee stirrers to make the floorboards, so that'll give me room to hide servo wires, rudder wires, etc. I had fun hiding everything in the Long Tail boat, I thought in a hull this size I'd be laughing...how wrong can you be.  <:(

Rambo's Machinergewehr will need quite a few ammo tins to sate it's appetite so perhaps a pile of them could hide the innards?

The plan is to follow the way I did the Long Tail...the front locker will house the battery, rx and the esc, wiring to the motor and the rudder servo will run under the floorboards, it's out of sight and out of the way there.

I've managed to get the motor and the rudder servo installed, they will be hidden under a wooden engine cover...I'll take some pics later on.

I bought some large fish boxes once, but I can't remember where I got them, they would be ideal for ammo boxes.

Really? It's 40mm diameter, if I go much more I'll be overloading the motor...it's not meant to be a fast boat by any means, more the sort of thing that a couple of guys would use for pottering along small rivers looking for signs of enemy positions, that sort of thing. The only time the throttle would be opened up would be if they were spotted and found themselves outgunned.

If it goes too fast, it will put Rambo's aim off! Is that flexible sealant you used and is it over anything like epoxy resin?

I only had a drop of epoxy left, so I used that to secure the rudder tube and the prop tube...the white stuff you can see around the motor mount area is the infamous ''Sticks Like S**t''. It goes on like silicone sealant, but dries hard. It does exactly what it says on the tin...although it can be removed with a sharp knife and a dry finger tip if needs be. It's brilliant stuff.

That's his cool looking new hairstyle, John...

Just waiting now on materials arriving, I've run out of styrene sheet for the forward locker and the engine cover box...once they arrive I can crack on. Rambo now has a new crew member, he's undergoing training on how to stand in the stern whilst hanging onto the rudder tiller arm without falling overboard. Been there, done that...

The rest of the volunteer crew signed on today, Rambo is briefing them on the patrol areas etc, as I type. (eight and a half quid from eBay)

I'm not happy with the motor mount, so first job tomorrow is to change it. I think I'll spray the hull before I go much further too, especially the inside.

Did you ever finish this model richard?

may be abit late to chime in but engine wise , drop the back and do what they do n motor boats to avoid the stern flooding , heres one i made earlier:

even if this is too late for this boat may help in the future....
