Marblehead yacht with braine steering
« on: May 28, 2007, 04:57:39 pm »

Hi all,
Has any of you got any decent deck photos of a marblehead yacht with working braine gear.
The yacht also needs some period sails to match, details of sails etc would be welcome.
The other option is to fit radio gear into the hatch and sail it

what do you think I should do?

From memory, the gear was basically two adustable lines from the boom to the tiller side arms, assuming a "T" shaped tiller.  The clever bit was that from the boom, each line went through a deck loop at the extreme edge of the deck, and then crossed over to the opposite side arm of the "T".  The base of the T was usually sprung to an adustable point on the deck to provide biased centering.
Properly adusted, it would track a heading relative to wind very well.  Actually getting the adjustment right was a true black art.

Hi ro88o

No pics, but I did a quick scan of MMi plan MAR 2863 Braine & Vane Steering. This plan shows how to make and set up both Braine and Vane steering, sail controls.

If you what more info, see plan let me know

Hi just picked up on this thread.  I restored a small Braine steering  yacht 25 inches loa, about 10 years back and part of the black art is getting the spring tension right.  I used an elastic band and twisted it like a helix to give more tension.  This has to be balanced against the strength of wind.
Great fun though.
best of luck Roy
