cheeky sods!
« on: December 31, 2014, 02:50:57 pm »

Just watching the programming called Mighty Ships, this episode was about a US Navy salvage vessel. They were in the North Sea off Scarborough searching for the Bonhomme Richard.

Now what galls me was the divers went down and placed a stars and stripes on the seabed because theywere the first us divers in the north sea!!

Why do they think they have the right to do this in OUR territorial waters?

I find the voice-over script on Mighty Ships, SO condescending!

The authors seem to have forgotten the North Sea oil capital of the UK (Aberdeen) had a lot of American staff/crewsers when establishing the  the wells and pipelines. They still are active doing routine maintenance.  The other piece of America in Scotland was on the west coast, the misnamed Holy Loch, home of the Polaris submarine depot ship. It wasnt an American flag they left behind <*<

Taking divers and Aberdeen, I worked for 'Sub-sea International' back at the end of the 1970's early '80's, and most of our divers where from the USA. Nice bunch of guy's and I'm sure non of them would agree with doing something like this.
But then again, a new generation now of oh so arrogant gits from the usa adding to their countries reputation. What "xxxxx".

john paul jones seemed to sail for several nations..Britain..America..france ...Russia..so we could have a line of flags on our seabed....hope not...don't think the usa would like us to put our flag on their sea bed...happy new year to all....tony

I had to laugh at the archaeologist "we have several search areas where we think it is" Obviously not heard of consulting local knowledge.

Ask any trawlerman or fishing boat crew.  I know  south-east Scottish inshore fisher who hauled up a few muskets and other ancient firearms in his net from a hitherto unknown wreck.

A US hero! A French Welsh Pirate who sailed for anyone who paid him lots of Dosh. Why did he sink here in the North Sea? Thought as a Privateer he only operated in American Waters.

...and that other "hero/pirate/privateer/founder of navies"   John Paul Jones was a Scotsman. Got his revenge for a bad apprenticeship by bombarding Whitehaven and pillaging a pub in that port in the English Lake District coast. Seems like a decent chap %)

As I understand it. He was sent to act as a raider plundering coastal ports an shipping. In other words a pirate acting for the US authorities. His ship sank after a fierce engagement with hms Serapis, unfortunately he was able to board the serapis and make his escape aboard that craft.
