Revell 1/72 Gato Class
« on: January 09, 2015, 08:33:42 pm »

Having completed my Italeri S-100 Schnellboot, I saw a thread on another modelling site of an amazing build of a Revell Gato Class Submarine.
Although it was only for static show, it has inspired me to change genre yet again.
I know I can never reach the standard that the builder of that particular project managed, however I like a challenge and have started my build of this subject.  I intend to incorporate some of his techniques, but intend it to have R/C only as a surface runner at present

Modifying the kit prop shafts to be operational, required separating the tunnels from the kit tunnel/shaft combination.
Unfortunately the first tunnel I attempted to drill out, I had the drill speed too high and partially melted the plastic.
This done, I initially I used carbon fibre rod to line up the drilled out kit 'A' frame and tunnel, before replacing with brass tubes and permanently attaching the tunnels to the rear hull sides.
This allowed me to mark off where the shafts would enter the bulkhead in the main hull.

Iv'e not had the ability to do much for a while, so now I am trying to get as much done as possible.
I am going to be laid up for a few weeks,  (new left shoulder op) so I am trying to get the difficult/fiddly jobs out of the way

Managed to get a little work done over the last few days, mainly to the PE deck areas & diving planes.

My intention had been to build as a surface runner, but as others have already said, I would change my mind once I got going.
Following advice given by more knowledgeable persons than myself, I have increased the area of the diving planes by 30% using plasticard extensions.

The PE decking was a pain to fit, but hopefully it will pay off when all is painted.

While waiting for a WTC to be made up by Marks Model Bits, got a little painting done as it was such a nice day outside today.
A thin coat of primer to show up any imperfections that need some attention. (quite a few areas)

You are doing a great job on the sub. Are you crafting this sub as a WWII sub? If so, you will need to open the hatches on the sides of the sail. An area I would remove is those rectangle weld lines only one or two subs had them and it was a post war addition. I did not think about that when I did mine.

Great looking Sail there.
Will probably leave this semi sealed, as playing with the idea of making a mini WTC with the receiver in it. (2.4Ghz)
Tonight started on the Eduard PE side hinge plates, the job I have been putting off for quite a while.
Folded and temporarily attached with masking tape, until I have worked out the areas that need fettling around obstructions.

Not a lot to add recently, as having problems with a shoulder I'm waiting to have replaced.
Unfortunately this makes it difficult to use my left arm/hand.
I will hopefully post some of the minor updates over the weekend!

Thanks for the comments Marius, just one of the joys of life catching up with me!

Not a lot to show but been playing about with positioning prop shafts, modifying dive planes, and fitting the 'Eduard' PE side plates (a lot easier with Cyano Gell) as it gives more time to position.

Managed a little over the last few weeks.
Control rods/runs for the dive planes & rudder trial fitted, to check for freedom of movement.

Where did you get that little 2 outlet gearbox?
I looks like the one fitted to some older Tamiya battleships only with metal gears

The 'motorised' Lindberg PT 109 kit, has one similar.
One motor, with two outputs.

Heard the same, hopefully it will bring the price down to a more affordable level.
These are going for silly prices on e-bay.

Thanks Si, forgot you peruse this site too.
Starting to struggle with this now, with the shoulder problem. {:-{
Had pre -op assessment today, and will be informed within the next 28 days of op date.
Told arm will be strapped up for first 3 weeks after op, then at least 3 months before it will be functional. :(( :((
Not a happy bunny as modelling is my way of coping with things. :(( :((
Still, onward & upward.

Your build is coming along, we can wait until you get back to it.
Peace,
Tom

I know just how you feel Si, I had a spinal fusion several years ago, and the three months of only being allowed to lay down or stand up, with no sitting did my head in.
However it did get rid of 30yrs worth of pain & painkillers I had been suffering.

At this time my wife allowed me to use the kitchen worktops (just the right height) to work on my R/C aircraft without having to bend etc..

Anyway I do hope that your back improves soon.

Hopefully back on board this year.
A few medical problems and complete lack of modelling mojo for a while now.

Hopefully over it and make some progress on this, as like most of us I have built up a stash in my cupboard I would like to get into.

Strange! No interest in building, didn't stop me from accumulating several more kits though.

Oh,you got it bad. Yep, incurable modeling disease. Some say it is caught when you touch plastic and work with it, others believe it is an overload of pride when you complete a model, still others think it is because of the thrill of learning and the challenges each model brings. I do not know what it i, but I have dozens of models in boxes that I have collected over the past several decades. I have been trying to limit my acquirements to sub related. That has been my most recent discipline. My next one is to sell the ones that are not sub related.
