Name can cause safety problems too. I remember hearing a difficult conversation on VHF between the coastguard and a yacht which was in trouble off the Isle of Wight. The yacht's name was 'Don't Panic!' I expect the owner thought he was being clever when he named it.

I find it amazing some of the names that people come up with especially for their children the mind boggles! I worked with a guy who had a German wife they named their son "Dieter" shame his surname was "Gent", I can imagine the stick the boy got at school. Ah well progress.

I remember a cruise ship called Q 4 calling Barcelona Port Control. PC asked him to spell the name. He said Quebec four. PC asked him to spell Quebec. It went on for quite a while.

Calling Port Radio on the East and South Coast,
Warship Echo as was the callsign on 16 often
left me with a silence until the operator had
realised who we were.

If we've moved on to surnames, I knew a nurse who was called Mary Christmas. I often used to pull her leg about the surname of her husband.
