Hi guys, back to modeling after twenty years or so....
« on: January 09, 2015, 10:31:00 pm »

I just more or less finished the Revel corvette, to get myself back into the swing of things, now started Sirmar 1/48 V&W class destroyer, HMS Vega as in 1942 camouflage, do any of you know what colour her decks were, I have a b& w photo from above, and some pics of that card model, which show a kind of pale green where I feel Semtex would have been applied? The photo shows her with very light looking foc'sle which doesn't correspond with this colour scheme. Help??  {:-{

Is'nt  Semtex an explosive?.
Nowadays, yes.  Back then it was a sort of chocolaty brown lino like substance used as a deck surface.  Times change, language moves on.

Called Corticene in the Grey Funnel Line.

  Assuming that it has a Western Approaches camouflage scheme, the decks should be B30, a blue on the light side of medium. This should cover all horizontal surfaces including wood planking. The manual states that 'Semtex and similar composition' are not to be painted.

  Whilst Corticene was, as stated above, a form of lino, I believe Semtex was a kind of cement laid on the deck. The colour, apparently, was pale grey/green, not unlike the RAF's Sky Type S.

Is that a White Ensign paint reference?  Is there a Humbrol equivalent?
Next, what would a HDML deck be coloured?

  B30 is the Admiralty reference, indicating a blue with a reflectivity of 30%. The HDML deck will depend on the camouflage, generally B30 with light schemes or the much darker B15 with the Dark Modification.

  White Ensign do all these paints though ownership of the company has just changed.

  It's worth googling "Semtex colour" because there seem to have been large variations of colour.

Thankyou Malcolm, that makes sense to me and also agrees with further research I've been doing. It seems to be similar colouration to Western approaches camouflage, but is a different design, more sweeping curved panels than the angular designs.
Should make for a striking model on the water, I shall post pics when she is completed.

Hi Mike. I finished the same model a couple of years back, it was my first attempt at a model like this. I settled on  humbrol deck green for the decks, cant remember why though. My latest project is looking much much better. Good luck with it, would love to see some pics some time.
Cheers.

Hi Phil,
Thanx for that, I have found pictures of your build off the internet, I think my model portrays her about 1942, I think your scheme is later, looks realy well though, I have also seen threads from people worried about capsizing, I am lining the hull below the waterline with lead flashing, and am thinking brushless and lipo, as these ships capable of 37 knots, and it will be quite heavy.
I will post pic when basic construction is completed. ☺
