Snow Stops sailing and building
« on: January 21, 2015, 11:07:07 am »

Hi guys just a few pictures showing this lovely white stuff we are getting at the moment. Our home water  last Sunday was frozen and I assume with the cold nights we have been having will still be frozen. But the local weather for the week end says it will be tropical at 7c. We are 670 feet above sea level and when we get snow it tends to hang about for ever. Do You have any pictures you can share?

Call that snow? You should be up here in Queensbury!

Most of those flat-tops you can see are detached garages and none would be large enough to accumulate the tons of snow it would take for the roofs to collapse - assuming they're in reasonable nick.  I don't recall snow regularly building up here to anything like it does in some other countries e.g. Mick Burke will be able to tell you about Canada.............. :o
No doubt some outraged teuchter will now roar in with tales of crofts buried under fifty foot snowdrifts in the Scottish Highlands, but anyone daft enough to live in the wilderness should expect such extremes. Here in the suburbs a foot these days is considered "snowed in"!  8)

In Finland if the snow is above your wing mirrors you can have the day off

That's a bit hard on lorry drivers.

There are two hills in Windsor. Her Majesty lives on one.  We live on the other.
25 years ago moving to this hill was influenced by weather forecasts promising "snow on high ground".
Only had snow twice since then, both gone in a few hours.  We feel cheated.
Never had snow disrupt a sailing session.
Nice to see snow photos from far away exotic locations though . . .

Still snowing here hopefully should stop soon then we will have frost to contend with. No sign of any grit waggons. Thinking about putting a brushless motor and aircraft prop on the grand children's sledge. Any pictures from other snow affected parts of the UK .

Years ago, when we were first here, we had such a hard winter that the side roads were covered with hardpacked ice and our Boys went to School on Ice Skates and some of the Teachers came in on Cross Country Skis. Now they shut Schools if there is laying snow after 11.00. Wimps!
