She's coming home- temporarily
« on: January 22, 2015, 12:19:24 pm »

One of three paddle ferries that plied the Humber when I was a child in the 60's. Now returning for refit so she can carry on being a floating pub in London, I don't know whether to be sad or happy, it lengthens her life but how many of the patrons will know or care about her history?

I just hope she has a better end than her Sister,
Lincoln Castle, broken up in the Dock in Grimsby
Next to the Ross Tiger at the Fishing Heritage
Museum.
The other one is still afloat in Hartlepool.

Yes It will be nice to see her here all the same. The Wingfield Castle is in the marina at Hartlepool where she was built. She appears to be in a good cosmetic condition. The photograph shown is taken at a time when the floating pontoon that was usually used to drive cars on and off the ferry, was being repaired and vehicles were craned as shown from the adjacent Minerva Pier.

I wonder where it'll be repaired, I would have thought it would be a struggle to get through any of the lock gates with the paddle boxes, one of the reasons it moored at Minerva pier.

Well I caught a clip of her being towed up the Humber on satellite tv, there won't be a problem with dock gates, the paddle boxes are no longer attached to the boat. :((

Some interesting photographs of the old lady in dry dock at Hull. Sad to see no paddle wheels are now fitted.

Well I suppose you could say she is still afloat. But a sad end to a once proud lady- a yuppy drinks bar moored on the Thames! I remember making the trips across the Humber on her on saturday afternoons as a kid with my dad. I always thought it was a trip out, only in later life did I understand it was because the pubs had to close at 2-30 in the afternoons, but you could still drink in the saloon of the 'Castles' all day!

I got to play on deck as 5/6 year old while the 'old man' had a pint or two below :-)

Here's a link to the latest photos, they seem to have changed the location of the gallery since Cabman kindly shared it early:

So she's actually gone from being a bar on the Humber to a bar on the Thames  :-)

True, but on the Humber she was a moving bar not permanently moored :D

Very true Brian apart from the times when she often got stuck on the Humber mud banks and had to wait for the tide to free her. Maybe the crew sampled the bar too! I have a fond memory of a  Mersey Street School trip to Spurn Point on one of the ferries around 1956 when the school chartered one of them. We had a "crossing the equator" ceremony which involved a pool and the headmaster getting dunked. I have a photograph of it somewhere which was a Hull Daily Mail photograph.  Happy days!
