There's no-one left to dig it out, Gordon. Be careful - this could get political very quickly.

Some politico decided it was cheaper to leave ours in the ground and make 1000's redundant and reliant on state handouts to survive. Every government's decisions are driven by a hidden agenda- that was just the beginning of who controls our country, the elected government or multi national corporations with money to buy influence 8) 8)

We have over 300 YEARS worth of coal underground but it is deep.
It would need deep mines to get this resource.
It was decided years ago to go for gas (another hydrocarbon fuel).

No not mentioning the Miners Strike!!!

Just for example Gordon, Immingham handles 10,000,000 tonnes of coal
imports each year.
Mostly used in Coal Fired Power Stations giving you the power for your
Computer %) %)

It's not political, just economics.
A few years ago (don't know if it's still the case) they were harvesting Scottish prawns or the like, putting them in a refrigerated container, sending them to the far east where cheap labour processed them, then putting them back in the container and shipping them back to the UK for consumption. Because it was (is) cheaper than paying UK labour rates.

So no surprise it's generally cheaper to buy foreign coal dug out by cheap labour and/or big machines.
Now if the government was to try and force 'us' to buy UK coal even though it was more expensive THAT would be political, and all hell would break loose  >>:-(

Gordon.......we in OZ are just getting to some of the disastrous consequences of fracking for gas........but again it's politically driven   %) ....one of our concerns is the disappearance of the water table below the earths surface >>:-(

So better watch out that the English channel doesn't go down a hole  :o or GAZOU & his mates [the Froggies] would be able to walk to your little island

The major gas producers say NSW will run out of gas by 2030, however we plan to sell most of our natural reserves for a give a way price to China  <*< .... Derek

Australia's natural-gas reserves are an estimated 3,921 billion cubic meters (bcm), of which 20 percent are considered commercially proven (783 bcm). The gas basins with the largest recoverable reserves are the Carnarvon and Browse basins in Western Australia; the Bonaparte basin in the Northern Territory; the Gippsland and Otway basins in Victoria and the Cooper-Eromanga basin in South Australia and Queensland. In 2003–2004 Australia produced 33.2 bcm of natural gas, of which 62 percent was produced in Western Australia. The majority of Western Australian gas is sourced from the North West Shelf. Australia also produces LNG; LNG exports in 2004 were 7.9 Mt (10.7 bcm), six percent of world LNG trade.[5] Australia also has large deposits of coal seam methane (CSM), most of which are located in the anthracite deposits of Queensland and New South Wales.[5]
On 19 August 2009, Chinese petroleum company PetroChina signed an A$50 billion deal with American multinational petroleum company ExxonMobil to purchase liquefied natural gas from the Gorgon field in Western Australia,[6][7] the largest contract signed to date between China and Australia. It ensures China a steady supply of LPG fuel for 20 years, forming China's largest supply of relatively clean energy

I started typing this from memory, thinking it was Churchill having a go at the Opposition:

"This island is made mainly of coal and surrounded by fish. Only an organising genius could produce a shortage of coal and fish at the same time."

Thought I'd better check; it was Aneurin Bevan talking about his own government!

From the other point of view, we're buying coal from other countries at a reasonable price. When all their coal is gone, we'll still have all ours left, reopen the mines and name our price....

Dear GAZOU.... "and there will be lots of rosbeef to froggies"...... %) ....

Does it mean when the English Chanel goes down the gurgler full of Swiss cheese holes  {-) that you guys will walk across the ditch & have rare English roast beef sandwiches for lunch at a disused coal mine?

Possibly you could bring a little parcel of red wine & bread  :P ....Derek

If they are peeled they have been to Morocco and then sent back to Germany, daft or not? I remember a Company in UK that manufactured a Medication, it was sent, by road, to Eire, made into tablets, shipped back to UK where they were put into packets. You can only shake your head.Something to do with the fact that the Irish Factory was in an EU Aid Zone, so everything was subsidised.
