Deans Marine Customs Launch Badger
« on: February 05, 2015, 03:26:26 pm »

This is my first post to this forum. I am contemplating purchasing a Badger kit, as I have already constructed a 34" version of the Guardsman/Seeker (actual name: Enterprise) Customs steam cutter. I am aware of the earlier H P Moore design and drawings but I can't find any decent pictures of the Deans model. Has anyone built this kit, do you have photos, and what do you think of the kit and its performance? Thanks, Nick

Welcome to Mayhem, Nick.                :-))

You have come to the right place.  Sit down and have a look around.

It's your turn for the biscuits at tea time.

I'm going over to Dean's Marine next week, I'll see if I can look around the showroom model for you.

Thanks Martin,
looking at Mayhems gallery of photos of visits to Deans shop, there a 'Badger; on a display stand with some other similar boats, but it's just in a general view, with no detail visible. I am  interested in how it differs from the H P Moore drawings, which were based on sketches made of a real member of the class. 'Badger' is probably a generic name, and it is possible that the now preserved 'Diligence', on the Isle of Man, and featured on facebook, (just google it) is the original, as it appears almost identical except for a much higher bow bulwark. I like to get the general look and proportions of models about right, while accepting that compromises are inevitable.

No problem.   :-)

I think one of the 'compromises' is that the model is much smaller than the original.....!    %)

Compared to the Deans Marine model, the wheelhouse looks lower on the Moore drawing - gives it more of a 'yachty' profile, IMHO.
A source for the H.P. Moore drawings: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Model-Boat-Plans-vintage-47-radio-Control-Custom-Launch-plans-article-/301491002034?pt=Radio_Control_Vehicles&hash=item4632439ab2

Hope this helps!

Hi all, an attractive model I bought the MAP plans which is for a 48 inch model but never built it, bit too big for me.

Thanks everyone for your contributions, especially mrlownotes, who most kindly sent me photos and scans of the Model Boat building review, and to Ron Dean for his photos and confirmation that the kit was designed from official drawings. I am a retired architect, so I love drawings! I now feel much more confident about embarking on this project.
