I have never worked on such mechanical versions of black art machinery........if God wanted AZIPODS he would have given Noah one [or two] {-)

No sense in it being bashed about  <*< by partially sunken containers

Could it be only extended [lowered] when being used as a 360 degree drive for continuous GPS function?...13.5 tonne thrust is not a small value.........

[ie., to keep the vessel on continuous station?].............Derek

I was also thinking along the lines of dynamic positioning Derek.

Almost certainly. You probably wouldn't risk leaving it down in general cruising (the extra drag would get expensive too) or use it in shallow water when docking, which will be why they have a tunnel thruster as well.

Am I being really dense :-X ............. Why would you need/want a retractable azipod?

Reduces drag when you're not using it. It's only meant for low speed maneuvering and emergency propulsion so when the ship's plodding across the Atlantic or wherever it doesn't get used.

EDIT: Ah, we're onto two pages. Yes, DP also comes into it.

I've had the misfortune of working on one, although electric driven. The worst thing was everything having to go up and down a single ladder run, from the bottom of the boat to just above the waterline, as the compartment was watertight up to there in case someone ever knocked it off.

I suspect she has a Rescue & Recovery role; what used to be known as a 'standby vessel'. (The GA appears to show rows of seats which would be a requirement for R&R.) If so, then she could spend long periods loitering when the continued use of the main engines would be inefficient. That's when the Aquamaster (if that's the make) azimuthing thruster comes into its own allowing the vessel to keep station with minimum fuel consumption and maximum efficiency.  She may have DP or may not.

Similarly if waiting-off for backload over an extended period, the Master might well elect to save fuel by going to the azimuth only or, if needing a bit more oomph (technical term) while towing, the azimuth may supplement the main screws.

She may have DP or may not.
As a modern Anchor Handler I'd be amazed if she hasn't got some very sophisticated and accurate DP.

She may - she may not - the Ship's Particulars will confirm that. As an anchor handler it's not essential. However, if she spends a lot of time in the supply role, then she may well have DP for offshore, alongside, discharge and backload.
