Fairmile D lrrc No 040
« on: February 17, 2015, 04:50:14 am »

G/day,
A few photos showing the start of my next build.

Hull from Christian at MTB hulls very good.
I am building this boat in honour of Geoff Edmonds who was a wireless operator on boat 040.
He also operated on Whalebacks one boat being 144 Geoff is about to turn 95 this year.
I will attach a photo of Geoff with my Fairmile D mtb.

Looks promising, I have the same hull but a couple of projects down the list!  Whose portholes are you using?

Thanks for the quick response.I am toying with the idea to convert my 4x545 RS motors
To two brushless also leaving the outer props unpowered.

Why are you running two brushless motors in a fast planing hull from a lead-acid battery? It will require a lot of power just to push the battery along and there's no chance that a SLA battery will be able to supply anything like the current those two motors will need to run efficiently. It's a bit like asking a forty-stone bloke with one arm to act as fireman on the Mallard. Lead-acid batteries have their place in a displacement hull which requires a lot of ballast and a slow-revving, low-current motor.
LiPo's are the obvious choice for the Fairmile because they can supply very large currents, but there's no reason why you shouldn't use NiMH batteries if the thought of LiPo's bothers you. Capacities are now up to 5AH for Sub-C cells.
Fairmiles should be fast and furious - not plodding and ponderous!

They weren't that fast.

Lucky to hit 27/28 knots at best with good engines and a clean hull.

Long range rescue and fast and furious doesn't equate.
On an ocean rescue in heavy seas 18 to 20 Knots would
have been the norm.
