Hull plating
« on: February 20, 2015, 09:10:03 pm »

Regarding riveted hull plating, here I'm thinking of merchant ships circa 1900.

How was it determined where to begin and in what order hull plating was riveted together? I'm imagining there has to be an order otherwise there would be odd comings together at various parts of the hull.

If you look at some of the Conway's books (Anatomy of a Ship) especially the Flower Class Corvette book.  Some give a development lay out of the hull plating which is pretty useful for getting your head wrapped around the process.

Some of the individual plates were of a slightly different shape and size to the main plates. These were known as "Stealer Plates" so they are not unusual to find

I take it the stealer plates are much the same as in timber hulls. Where two main pieces won't quite match, so they are altered to get a 3rd 'stealer' piece into place.

Hi Brian,

What you really need is a shell expansion drawing. Something like this.

Brian, Your question was where to start. Usually start at the stern so the flow goes over the end joints. When joggled, but if a strap joint is used not important. But builders are very traditional.  At the keel fit the first row. Then miss and lay another inside( not inside the frames {-)) row. when the missed row is laid it laps over the inside layers. Can also start at top deck level working down, in the same manner. Some times this will mean a row with inside on one edge, and outside on the other. This will be at the turn of the bilge.
