Tug fittings
« on: March 01, 2015, 10:02:56 pm »

I am presently building the Mountfleet ST Cruiser and am also using the General arrangement drawings in the book British steam tugs by P.N. Thomas for details.
On the rear deck on either side of the gog eye the drawings show a stopper, these are not on the Mountfleet plan. (The drawing shows a fairlead , this has a folding gog eye on it. Does anyone have any details of what these stoppers should look like?
Also on the superstructure the drawings show what appears to be vents to some of the compartments. These are labelled as tv and unfortunately the side view does not show them. Again any ideas as to what they would look like?

I would think the stoppers are to prevent the rudder quadrant from over steering.
Perhaps just a steel block or triangle to catch the quadrant as it reaches it's port or
starboard extreme limit.

The TV are perhaps those upside down "J" vents for the Tanks.

Thanks,
however I doubt that they are gooseneck vents as at least one is shown as being above the door on the drawing.

My memory keeps coming up with something simple like "turnable vents" They are obviously above the doors so I assume that they are cabin ventilators design to rotate with the breeze like cowl vents but vertically instead of horizontally.

In the drawing they don't really look like the ones I know, but T V might be Torpedo Vent.
Turnable sounds more likely really - the bits on the left in the diagram might be handles.

I'd go with Ned on this one. They are only in wet areas, and above the doors. %)

Thanks everyone, now does anyone have a suitable drawing or photo of one of these vents?

I think that I have managed to solve the vent problem. While looking through some back issues of Model Shipwright I found details of a torpedo vent used in situations like the tv vents on the drawing.

Torpedo Vent certainly fits the "TV" designation.

It doesn't quite match those on the general arrangement drawing but looks like they will do the job. Just got to make several and fit them now. The main sections can be easily made from tubing but I might have to see if the cones can be moulded from resin.

Can you sharpen a dowel in a pencil sharpener and cut off what you need each time?

Or a plastic rod perhaps.

It might be easier but looking at a freshly sharpened pencil the angle of the cone is too fine. I might turn the end of some brass rod to a suitable angle and make a temporary mould from plasticine to allow me to cast it in resin. (I have some resin sitting there waiting to be used %) )
