3 pounder High angle weapon query
« on: March 06, 2015, 10:17:10 pm »

How do gents. I am currently scratch building a model of one of these in 1:96th which I plan to mould and cast for my big gun monitor.

I have stats and a side image of one http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNBR_3pounder_V_mk1.htm and another of the front/rear from a long way away, but I wonder if anyone has any more images if said weapon?

I could send you a kit if it is something that would be of use to you on your model:O)

There are two types of 3 pounders from that general era the Vickers and the Hotchkiss - I was under the
impression BT was after the Vickers and unfortunately I only had a couple of views of the Hotchkiss
which is also what you have referred to Mudway

Thankyou chaps. Mudway's link has inadvertantly shown me that '3D Boats' has added some more early weapons to his range including 3pdrs and 12pdrs. When I last looked he only had the saluting gun (IIRC). I need two 12 pounders for my Monitor and can get four for a reasonable price  from Shapeways but will have to continue my whittling to create the HA version.

I have quite a good view of one side, but the other is still a mystery to me. I assume the traverse wheel was on that side.

I will ask at the NMM to see if they have any GA drawings of the mount as the gun is pretty similar to the normal anti shipping type.

A suitable case for a call to John Lambert at http://www.feralchicken.co.uk/lambert-plans/

He seems to have a plan for most weapons.

Thanks Barry. I had a look and did not see the weapon I am researching, but I saw a few references to other weapons I might need to make in the future.

Hi Ian. We had two of those guns outside of the Sergeants mess at CTC RM Lympstone. They were taken away a few years ago. I will try to find out where they are now, and get some pics if I can. Phil.

Well I never! I don't know that any were built, so I hope at least one was saved for posterity. There are several museums that may have acquired them. I had forgotten IWM Leeds have an armoury.

Thanks for that Phil.

You try writing to the Woolwich Arsenal.  If anyone has one they will.

Fort Nelson near Portsmouth has a large collection of naval guns including smaller ones. I don't know if they have what you are looking for but they may be able to help:
http://www.royalarmouries.org/visit-us/fort-nelson

I also did a report for Model Boats a while back:

The last time I was there, they did not have an example of the weapon though I was not looking for it in particular, so I may have missed it while looking at other things! I have sent a message to Mr McQuinn about his range and ideas, and am going to make contact with the Royal armouries as they have lots of stuff about the place and might have those that Phil mentioned above!

Hi Ian. I made some enquires today about the guns. As far as I can make out, they were taken away by the IWM London. They seem to have been a swop for some of the firearms that are on show around the Sergeants mess, where I work. I will of course try to find out more for you. But if you need some pics of a BAR, Lee Enfield 303, lanchester, Thompson sub machine gun, Kar98, ak47, Mauser, Bren gun, Vickers water cooled machine gun, I can help. Not a bad swop really. Cheers. Phil

Not at all bad! Your information has helped immensly thanks. I now know who has them and also that they are safe. The tought of any history being chopped up for scrap horrifies me.

There are plans for the various 3 pdrs fitted to Fairmiles during WWII in the 'Allied Coastal Forces' book by John Lambert.

But a sheet of plans are available from John (although he is quite ill I believe):-

Hope that helps.

All the best

There is a large book entitled "Naval Weapons of WW2" Frontspiece shows a cutaway of quadruple 14" gun turret. I have the book but am at work so can't view it. It takes you through each countries weapons starting with the big ones and working its way down through to the smallest so may have some details therein. I'll try to check later.

cheers
