Hi Everyone

For those of you, MBPRS members or spectators alike who fancy joining us, please remember that this venue is superb with a big lake, boat prep areas right next to it on the adjoining grassy bank at the lake side, superb all round. These few photos give a taste for what a Great time we had during our last meet up:

Big enough for the biggest of boats!

Time for an Ice Cream between races!

Great launch area!

And, just a small section shown here of the boat prep area next to the water side:

I hope to see you at the lake side soon :-))

Race has unfortunately been cancelled due to high winds and rain forecast. Decision made by majority vote by members who have entered.

Personally I think it is a great pity that we're not able to race this weekend as leicester is one of my favourite venues because it is such a big lake enabling the bigger boats to really stretch their legs.

I do think the correct decision has been taken however having just looked again at tomorrow's forecast.

Venues held early in the year are always susceptible to bad weather, Leicester been one of them.

You will find that the Leicester Club are restricted to only being able to host races outside the wildlife nesting season, which apparently lasts most of the summer!
Marie of the King Lear Model Boat Club can provide exact details.

Yes it is true that our calendar is in part determined by the commitments and restrictions of our partners, our local host clubs.

In fact planning the calendar is quite a thankless task! Keeping every aspect happy!!!

Compromise is the key, as our chairmen past and present have illustrated.

Hi Folks

Firstly, in respect of this cancellation, I totally support the decision taken, following consultation with those potential attendees who planned to turn up, conditions permitting.

In respect of arranging the BMPRS race Calendar, that is a tricky job for our committee. It is not so much a question of us picking and choosing our own dates for each venue. We don't have that luxury.

We have to give consideration to what is available to us, because each venue has their own limitations in respect of the slots that are kindly allocated to us as potentials. Our host clubs do a fantastic job in supporting us and allowing us to use their waters, and we rightly have to work it the best way to comply with what is kindly made available.

Limitations can rightly include wild life considerations, other events planned etc. Factor that in with trying to exclude key weekends when members tend to be on vacation and not available, and it becomes logistically quite tricky to get a calender best suited for good overall support from the majority of members.

I am disappointed that the Leicester event has been cancelled. But it was the correct decision.

However my memories of the last Great Event at Leicester, tell me not to be too hacked off. I shall much look forward to our next meet up at Leicester.

Craig :-)

Bit of rain never hurt anyone, while i agree its not nice if its wet it would make more sense to me to just get on with it rather than have to cancel and then try and rearange things for later dates  O0 .

Having spent a few hours at the sharp end of race organisation, I have every sympathy when the OOD is forced to cancel an event.  Although the racers would probably not object to a "bit of rain", the event is usually only cancelled/postponed when conditions would render unsafe operation of the rescue boat.  This is more to protect the rescue crew from having to sit in the boat for what seems like a very long time.  They would be wet (100% waterproof clothing IS available but costs a fortune), they can't wear gloves to pick up slippery wet boats so the wind chill feels like minus 10. Apart from being extremely uncomfortable, they risk their health!
An easy way would be to dispense with the rescue boat, but if conditions are so bad, the models are going to be all over the place!  I would not have relished the thought of my boat (even with flotation and 100% (?) waterproof radio box, sitting upside down for part of the race in the line of fire from any boats that do manage to keep going after a fashion.
To cancel a race is a difficult decision that is not taken lightly, and is always a bit of a gamble regarding the weather.  In most cases it has proved to be the right decision.
This is, after all, a hobby which is meant to be enjoyed by all (and usually is) but not at the expense of the welfare of the volunteers.

Cheers

I'm only pulling peoples leg a bit about the weather and i can see the difficulty of second guessing the weather, just saying if cancelling then means the race may not even take place at a later date then maybe just sometimes you just have to take the risk that everything might work out on the day weather wise.I suppose when i think about it it is a difficult job and not an easy descision you have to make  {:-{ . The multi lads raced yesterday though :-)) ,i do agree about safety been paramount and on that note i also think the rescue boat should never be on the water during races but that's just my opinion, the Yanks seem to manage fine so might be an idea to try it that way.

martin there's already talk of how to replace the heat whilst it may not be at leicester we do have other venues that we can use at short notice  or are extremely flexible with date for us !

the decision to cancel the race was down to the members who had booked in not down to the ood or committee   bmprs is about enjoying the hobby and socialising along with racing we find this makes the day more enjoyable and people look forward to attending the meetings as things are less serious than with more competitive meeting that happen ! its all about FUN LAUGHING AND EVERYONE ENJOYING THE DAY !

on the matter of rescue boat whilst racing bmprs take safety seriously and since its start have only had a few very minor incidents not accidents (theres a difference !  one of which i was personally involved in, whilst some agree you should not use rescue boats whilst the race is "live" we have rules that members are to follow to minimise the risk of these incidents and should members not follow the rules then the ood has powers on the day to stop any dangerous persons from continuing to operate a boat on the day

Remember BMPRS is 5 years old this year and at no point in this period has a running boat caused any harm to any persons at a meeting !

on the issue of the multi race yesterday yes hat off to them but the lake they raced on is less than 1/2 the size of leicester and no where near as exposed plus they use a transponder system for there counting where we have people who lap score ! rescue is kept to a minimum at the end of a race ! also theyre all points hunting for a place in the england team for the world championships !

anyway quick question when was you last lakeside getting wet with a boat in near freezing conditions ? or even just lakeside with a running boat ?  errmmmmmm  {-) {-) :-)) :-))
