daft question regards 2.4ghz
« on: March 15, 2015, 07:45:31 pm »

Hi guys,

This is a bit of a noobie question, but heck, its worth asking in my mind at least  ;D

What of the budget range 2.4ghz sets offers the best range and reliability please?

Never had a problem with a planet T5 either....sailed a Marblehead well over 500 yds away before I turned it back to do a range test on the sets when they came out Excellent value for money.

One thing that you have got to remember is an average model is 36ins long and seems huge at the lake side....put it out over 60yds and the average modeler can not see it lol, put it out over 100yds and half the modellers can not differentiate which way it is going  O0

Totally agree.  I find a big White Ensign is an invaluable visual aid when approaching the other side of Black Park Lake using warship colour schemes.   Trusty Planet T5 gets my vote  O0

Hi Sean

I started out with Radio Link, superb and the recievers are cheap, excelent range, not heavy on batteries. Just upgraded mine to Futaba T6. Not used Planet but if you subscribe to Model Boats mag you get a free Planet T5!!!

I can't argue against the Radiolink, though supply can be an issue.
A different take on the cost is that you only need one transmitter, but potentially several receivers. Therefore I now use a Spektrum DX5e transmitter and buy Orange DSM2 receivers. These are generally less than £8 each from Hobbyking. This way you have a full range transmitter but minimise the cost of receivers.

I started in 2G4 with a radiolink and no problems with reliability or range.
Upgraded to a Spektrum DX6i with orange receivers and the same results.
There is an Orange Tx at Hobbyking which is the same as a DX6i but a lot
cheaper. I have not used one myself but the reports are good. It is Orange
though  :embarrassed: :embarrassed:

Ohhh there is a good point from Barrie, and some excellent feedback from everyone. I shall have a look at the Planet T5, and the orange one from hobby king (not fussy at all!)

Thank you guys :-)

Very simple, reliable, no bells, no whistles outfit.  Certainly not the cheapest RXs, and I have a feeling that they probably won't bind with anything else.  My TX has a dislike for rechargeable AA cells, constantly complaining about low volts.  Works fine on cheap single use cells.
Binding is not particularly intuitive, so I printed my instructions and taped them to the back of my TX.

Just a word of caution . If you boat is a slow scale boat ,nearly all the budget sets will be fine . If it is a fast electric or fuel I would go for a higher end of the market make like Futaba

Okay thanks guys.

John,
I have relatively little interest in speed boats, baring the odd life boat here and there  %% so it sounds like I should be okay  with the cheepie sets for now  O0 I hope  :embarrassed:

Thank you for the warning, I shall bare it in mind for the future my friend.

If you are after a steering wheel transmitter, then the Flysky Gt3c is a good option,it is only 3 channel but it is a reliable radio and the range is as good as futaba,i have used it in 1/5 scale petrol as well as fast petrol boats and yes slow electric as well.
They do a 6 channel stick transmitter as well.
