T S S Earnslaw Queenstown New Zealand
« on: March 03, 2015, 07:20:40 pm »

We travelled on this lovely old vessel during our time in New Zealand. She was built in 1912 still burns coal. Rudder control is via chain down both sides of the ship I have more pictures if you are interested.

I recall sitting in the lounge overlooking the engine and enjoying a beer and a cone of chips. Bliss!

We saw Earnslaw coming into Queenstown too although we didn't travel on her but I did have a chat with her Mate.

This shot was taken a day or so later when we were driving around the lake.

One of our club members is building a model of her based on a little booklet and photos he has taken . When finished I'll post some pictures.

The name of the boat is actually Earnslaw - not Earnshaw. I've changed the spelling in the topic title. More info here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TSS_Earnslaw

We saw her on Lake Wakatipu on one of our visits to NZ but, like Colin, did not travel on her. She's a lovely reminder of days gone by.

Think Float-a-boat in Melbourne, Australia, did plans for this a year or so ago.
There is also a large model in the office at the wharf. You may have to ask to see it, as sometimes kept in the managers office.
The more photos the better, please.
cheers

There might just possibly be a plan published in Model Boats later this year but it isn't definite.

Must have been fun travelling on her Stan, we were tempted but felt it was a bit too expensive, but of course just about everything in Queenstown is expensive! Amazing place though.

HI Colin it was all part of the tour. We travelled over the lake to a barbecue evening them back at dusk. I have some pictures of the engine room which I will post later. I was informed that the lake which she crosses is around 800 to 1000feet deep.

You forgot the concrete block that they move from side to side as ballast as the coal is used in the side bunkers!

The dollar has dropped from 2.8 to 1.8 to the pound in the time that I have been going over to see my son in the Wairarapa. Diesel costs is not too bad at just over $1.13 a litre

This shot of Earnslaw was taken from the cable car summit in Queenstown. More to follow.

Having been built in Dunedin the Earnslaw has been the subject of a couple of modellers. Here is a picture of the Earnslaw recently completed by club member Henry Gooselink.

First two pictures are taken from the jetty showing bow shot of Earnslaw and one taken crossing the lake.  Second lot of pictures are strange craft seen in Queenstown a platform powered by water jets and a craft that travels around 80 KM/HR it jumps out of the water dives under water to about 5feet and can carry severe rolls. It looks like a shark a very strange craft.

Hi Stan.
While in Queenstown did you try the Shotover Jet and the A. J. Hackett Bungy Jumps?

When I was there in early 2013 it rained for 7 of the 11 days of our trip around the South Island. We did the trip on the TSS Earnslaw and got some great images, both of the ship and surrounding scenery. A very beautiful part of the world.
The one thing that really stood out on the Earnslaw was the cheap bronze anodised aluminium window frames on the wheelhouse. Done for durabilty I guess, but looks cheap compared to stained timber.
