Fibre optic cores
« on: March 29, 2015, 09:39:35 pm »

Good day all, I am busy with the control desks of the tug Portgarth and want to use fibre optic cores to simulate lights and lit push buttons on the desks. But to source these individual cores is proving a bit of a nightmare in South Africa. What is the position in the UK?  Can anybody help?  Thanks. Brian.

Have a look in the furniture shops for fibreglass light arrays.  The sort you require can be found in light displays that hang in a bunch like an imitation tree.    :}

Cheers

Try looking for those old fiber optic fan type displays that were popular in the 70s. The fibers are short but can sometimes be picked up cheap locally.

Last Christmas the pound shops were full of battery operated fibre optic lights.
Enough separate fibres for a control panel.

Might be Rand shops where you are  ;D

Yes second hand fibre optic lights are the way to go if you can find them.  I will be on the lookout for them but I must say that the component shop has some good stuff and I might fall for what they have to offer.  They also specify the diameter of the core which is useful.  Cheers. Brian
