IC clutch question
« on: April 08, 2015, 08:27:59 pm »

IC boaters, does anyone know if the collet on the clutch is removable? I need an m6 shaft to connect the drive shaft to.

Hi tom

Yes they are a pig to remove, as Kurt says.

I managed to get mine off using a wheel puller from machine mart, ( cost about ££8).

I put a washer between the two parts of the coupling, and used the wheel puller to push the crankshaft away from the collet / coupling. It took a tight turn on the spanner but then much to my relief, popped off.

Hope this makes sense though I've not explained it very well!

Forgot to add, you need to loosen the bolt securing the coupling first then loosen it by about two turns. Then apply the wheel puller, with the outside grabbers to the coupling washer, the inside point co nnects to the loosened  center bolt on the crank.

Remove the nut, back off the allen bolt a couple turns. Flip the insert around and back in, to push on the bolt. Do up the nut till the insert is pushing. Using long wrenches for good leverage, tighten the nut while holding the collet. It will pop off.

Or on most collets you can replace the allen bolt with a 30mm long allen-head cap screw. Install it 4-5 turns, put the nut on (no insert), tighten and pop it off.

Or again using the insert, put it in then loosely tighten down the nut with fingers as you want it just a hair loose. Hold the collet body with a wrench. Insert the Allen wrench and unscrew the bolt, that'll pop the collet loose.

Maybe use a bad collet as you could damage it during the process.... If you are not intending to use it again it doesn't matter.
