Back in the late 1970's, RMAS Rollicker had a similar problem in the Pentland Firth when RFA Blue Rover lost its rudder literally, it fell off, in a storm 10. The Rover went back and forth with the tide using its engines to keep of the rocks until the Rollicker came to the rescue. When she had her in tow, the Rover followed almost abeam of the Rollicker because of the strength of the wind. Naturally the crew received a Bravo Zulu signal but little else.

rescuing the larger Russian Aircraft carrier.

It was the acrobatic skill of the crew in maintaining their grip on the deck and staying upright while appearing unperturbed by the motion of their vessel that impressed me.

Couple of RMAS Rollicker carrying out a successful Towing Exercise some years ago. Bit lumpy that day, but when a vessel slows down the movement is physical a lot less than it seems visually. Though now the MoD has no large towing facility, the R's were the last.
