Today I have made a start on the brass railings, all the rails are made from 1mm rod and up to now they are looking ok. Lot's more of them to do so it's going to be a long job.

Handrails and stanchions can be a nightmare to get right however, yours are looking really crisp so, well done so far. :-))

A bit more done on the rails, as you can see it's starting to take shape but still a way to go yet. :-))

Well today a was at it for about 5 hours feeding all the enamel coated copper wire for the mast lights that was recommended, then I soldered 12 LED's in place done a test and found a dead short......dam......I can only put the short down to when the wire is pushed in to the mast it must get the odd scratch and this has caused the short. So now it's all been removed and it's back to the drawing board for another way feed all the lights.......will get there in the end.

Regards Dave.

     Yo Dave,
I had a similar problem with my Norton cross mast lights (not using coated wire but the Component shop stuff) checked every stage of the proceedings but when the wiring was finished 3 of the leds did not light, "xxxxx"! As all the wiring was fitted with individual resistors to enable power from the main 12v sla battery and to make it worse ran inside the mast then down through the inside of the wheelhouse this meant that to find the fault and cure it I had to remove the rear section of the wheelhouse I was not amused. It turned out to be one faulty resistor and two duff leds. Moral of the story is that I now check, check and treble check every stage of the wiring as it progresses.
Not sure that I would chance coated wire because,as you quite rightly said, it is so easy to scratch off the coating and bingo a short. Good luck with it but walk away from it if you feel like lashing it across the room, I know I did but got there in the end.
     Cheers,
            Faz.  :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))

Would it be possible to bond a suitable  length of the wires together before pushing through the mast? That would prevent scratches/shorts but then you would have to think about the heat from soldering. Just thinking out loud Dave - not actualy engaged any grey cells.

Hi Dave
Redo it the same way but push and pull the wire at the same rate once the cable has exited the mast .  once a wire is in meter it to the mast and other cores . If  short circuit to the mast or other cores it will need to come out . But before you pull it out use it as a draw string . Try some wax around the hole were you are feeding the cable in it will help let the cable slide and offer a little protection. Check the holes were the cable goes in are bure free and smooth .

I have the same problem when doing the mast for Fairmount , I worked round the problem by injecting the tube with insulating varnish , it's available from your local RS outlet .
I have a fair bit left if you want to give it a go. There is only one drawback when it  dries you can not get any of the wire out. The offers there if you want some .

Ok I have now managed to get the mast lights working, after all attempts failed and a lot of head scratching I decided to glue a length of 1mm brass rod down the back of the mast, my idea was to use this to provide the live to the LEDs and the brass mast to be used as the negative. All the LEDs were soldered onto the mast and the live tails were then soldered onto the 1mm brass rod as can be seen in the photo's. Once it was done a quick check for a short and happily there was none so the big switch on and happy day's they all lit up as shown.......So now I'm a happy chappy,

Regards Dave.

Hi Dave,
I don't want to rain on your parade but how are you going to paint the mast? Its looking good so I am curious re the painting. That is my reason for running the wiring down the inside of the mast after the mast is painted prior to fixing it in place. Personally I find all the working lights/colours number of rivets etc a complete pain in the A**E (said an upsetting word in my last post) after showing boats at Blackpool last year so I am not going down that route again, do your own thing and if other people don't like it tough. Your work is great keep it going.
       Cheers,
             Faz. :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
