recommend a soldering iron
« on: July 20, 2015, 09:32:44 pm »

bought one of these kits with the de soldering pump, iron stand etc for originally restoring my late dads cb550, went to use it today for second time and its dead as a dodo... of course just passed the warranty period

so now looking to buy  reasonable price stand alone soldering iron ( no fancy accessories ) and thought about this one

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/58W-Variable-Temperature-Soldering-Station-Iron-Electronic-W-Extra-Tips-312095-/291515322349?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item43dfaacfed

just for my dads motorbike wiring and use on my model boats to so will be reasonably light use

let me know what you guys use or recommend if you know better

thanks

:-)) Weller soldering are the best you can buy, bought a second hand 24v one with transformer 35 years ago from a school that was closing down for a fiver, still going strong and you can still get tips and spares! also got a 230v one which is exactly the same design, these irons are not cheap but are well worth it,Ray :-))

I use a Weller, too, but they are eye-wateringly expensive. Antex has always been a good budget choice - British made so no problem with spares, tips, elements etc. This one is the 25W mains version with silicon cable, which is much easier to handle than the version with PVC cable. You can also find it with a coil-spring stand and sponge wipe. Recommended. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Antex-Xs25w-Soldering-Silicone-Cable/dp/B005ZEM7YI/ref=sr_1_1/280-2049977-0625622?ie=UTF8&qid=1437464181&sr=8-1&keywords=antex+soldering+iron+25w

While I have a selection of electric irons of various sizes going back into the mists of time (Weller, Antex, something huge with no name), most of my soldering these days gets done with an Idodo gas iron.  No trailing lead, just needs care about the exhaust gas.

I use ONE WEBER with stabilized temperature.

To use a sponge creates a thermal shock and abime the breakdown.

Use a straw block of brass, clean in every weld the end of the iron by plunging the iron into the paiile

This is the one I've used for the last seven years. Don't say you weren't warned about the price, though! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Weller-WS-81-Soldering-Station-Analog-80W-230V-/121439103209?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item1c4655a8e9

The Ebay one by the OP, it looks similar to a chinese 25watt one I have (yes I know its variable) If it is I would steer clear. After being on for 10-15minutes the handle is so hot it cannot be held in the hand without burning the skin. I have a Draper 35watt one that can be left on for an hour and the handle is nowhere near the temperature of the chinese one.

:-)) To add to my earlier post on this subject there are some good gas irons out there, these can be taken to the lake for the odd job and the mini torch is very handy(I use mine for soldering bullet connectors and heat shrink) but does not have the temperature control of a good mains iron,so you have a wide choice of options and like everything in this world you only get what you pay for,Ray. :-))

we should have a section on here for rating tools to build boats, some great advice and tips here

thanks for all your help and advice
