Lady Laura tug
« on: June 03, 2015, 08:13:22 pm »

I received the kit today bought off a fellow forum member all looks good, I need to get hold of the instruction manual for I as its missing from the kit so I shall give Metcalf a call tomorrow to see if I can have a copy sent.

My first question is... what motors? I was thinking about a pair of MFA919d with 6:1 gearboxes the tug is 31.5" x 9.5"  but open to suggestions I have a pair of battery drill motors but they don't seem particularly torquey.
Looking on the net I think I may do it as the Forth drummer but may be tempted to do Boss tug but plenty of time to decide that. I think I'll be using Action electronics for esc. etc.

Right o back to perusing the kit and bits and get familiar with the bits.

Dave Metcalf has retired.
Most of his stuff is now with
Andy Griggs at Models By Design
I believe.

the first thing you want to do is swap the white metal props for brass ones!......sadly the ones supplied with Dave's model were ok for a show model but pretty much US for a working tug.............but she makes into a lovely little tug..............wish I had never sold mine.

they also lend themselves to some modifications and detailing, and various colour schemes.............I enjoyed building mine which took a total of 28 nights from start to finish...........a very easy and lovely little model to put together on a building board with minimal of tools.

Having looked at the plan I have I think I can figure out how this is put together so I'll give it a go and not loose to much sleep over it after all what could possibly go wrong  %%

and so it begins

You could build her in her current state, FORTH DRUMMER.

The progress over the weekend is as follows I gleaned what info I could off the plan as to how the under deck structure would be and ended up with an ok solution I think all fairly straight forward. I have only attached the front deck the rear will have to wait until the hardware arrives but I can get on with superstructure etc. this week. I have given it a quick blow over with paint just to spot flaws in the deck to bulwark joint (plenty there)  %) .

excellent Dave............it's such a lovely little easy tug to do once you get to grips with using plastic rather than timber.

Thanks it is different using so much plastic in a big model. I have recently taken up scale modelling again which has helped, the lack of plans and instructions is slowing things but it's not impossible so far

Thanks at least I know where to go if I mess up the superstructure which I'm battling with this evening not knowing the order of build and what all the parts are makes it interesting  {:-{ .

I have now put this on hold the superstructure hasn't gone together well the lack of instructions and a missing plan did me no favours, I guess I put it together in the wrong order so it's going on back burner for a while until I can fix it {:-{

Message for mrturbo553 if you are still watching this thread please. You mentioned on June 3rd that you had a Lady Laura with 2 x T12. I am considering a similar fit in a MMM tug. What is your battery fit and what sort of endurance do you get. I have a couple of boats fitted with one T12 and one 7 A/Hr SLA Battery and get about 1 hr chugging round the pond.

Inputs from anybody else welcome (I probably don't need to ask!) but it is T12 information/experience I am interested in.

John , I use the slightly smaller 12volt 3ah battery ,rather than the 12v7ah that are installed in my other tugs . It seems to run well for a couple of hours just bimbling around the pond up at balne moor .just take a spare with you if you're worried they aren't particularly dear on the whole scheme of things .

Right O!. I have pulled this out to get it done and have dismantled the superstructure ready to rebuild thanks to Petewhit for the info I'm confident I can get on with her now. The parts are almost ready to re glue and a little filler is needed %)  but nothing to major, fingers crossed I have a boat to play with for the season.

Tony green does indeed do the kit now but after numerous emails I gave in trying to buy the bits I needed to start again.

Right the superstructure is back together now (and straight) I need to do a bit of work inside but detailing is pretty basic which is OK with me for now.

I have the superstructure well underway now not perfect but passable I hope I need to get it painted now before progressing  further. Next to get some of the hull sorted.
