Depron
« on: June 05, 2015, 07:25:52 pm »

I have liberated a few small sheets of 3 and 5mm depron. What's the best glue that I can get that is waterproof and fast setting. Also will the depron react with resin when I skin it. Just to save me from experimenting! I am making g a basic hull to see how good thus stuff is.

Here's a webpage http://depronfoam.com/depron-foam/depron_products.html with glue recommendations.
Depron is made from polystyrene (I think), so it should react the same way.

Polyester GRP resin will eat it the same as plastic weld and styrene cement type glues. Superglues will also attack it. PVA is alright and I am sure that Epoxy is alright as well. With any glue/material dab a bit on a non important piece of scrap first.

Hi,

As already said, UHU POR works great.
Foam safe cyano is available. Polyurethane also works well, it foams a little on drying but can be thinned a little with water to minimize this.
Can be safely skinned with epoxy resin.

Hope this helps,
Bill

I found uhu por very stringy, and it sets "soft" so doesn't sand well. I use canopy glue now.

The other thing to remember when using Depron, is to seal it completely before painting (esp if using rattle cans) as the solvent will attack the Depron, and can eat it away from underneath a sealed surface, if you are unlucky with overspray.

There was a good article in Model Boats Magazine a few months back by Ron Rees on building and finishing using Depron.

These are a selection of rc planes made from 3mm depron, they are water planes. We fly them at Carr Mill lake by St Helens.

We use mainly uhu por, it will dry hard, and can be (as was) sanded to shape. Epoxy is used for the weaker sections.

Acrylic water based paints work, and some humbrol acrylic rattler cans, :-))
