How big are the scale props?

If cost is a question I would suggest you use a couple of car dash fan blower motors. These are a reasonable size and should be available from the scrap yard at reasonable cost. I have used these in a number of large scale models and they work very well indeed.

They will take anything from 4.5 volts through to 14.5 volts and with the higher volts really kick out some power. I have used them in a couple of 6 foot battleships and running in parallel on 6v they draw 3.5 amps at full speed and on 12v draw 7 amps (all measured some years ago).

They are virtually silent in opeartion and have massive torque so can be connected directly to the prop shafts.

The only down side is that their stall current is in the region of 25 amps each but to solve this I have always put a 10 amp fuse to the speed controller and a separate 5 amp fuse to each motor. This works as I once made the mistake of sailing a battleship in some thin ice. Apart from scratching all the paint off on the waterline one of the props caughts one some ice which locked the prop. The engine mount tore off and the motor blew the 5 amp fuse but the other motor got me back safe.

If cost is not an issue then I would suggest you look at the brushless route as these have got cheaper and more flexible of late.

Hope this may help.

Cheers

Rob,

Where did you get your running gear from? Looking at the pic you sent me, would I be right in saying the props were actually of the same type/size as those fitted to the 'County class' ?

As a suggestion I'm swinging 60mm 5 blade props on my hms Mersey 1/48 scale (5 foot and a bit) using a pair of MFA torpedo 800's

My battleship at 100 scale being 8 foot 4 runs graupner speed 500E motors with 45mm 5 blade props.

French battle carrier Richelieu.

Still not build but water worthy hull and has some pace using the graupner 500 E motors.

A couple of car blower motors would be ideal for the build low drain and plenty of torque.
