Kyosho Jackson 540 Outboard
« on: June 07, 2015, 06:19:02 pm »

Hi,
Does anyone remember any specifics for the Kyosho Jackson 540 electric outboard motor?
One of the guys at my boat club has an old speed boat with one attached, currently it's running on a 12V 7Ah SLA which is way too heavy for the boat.
I've suggested moving him to 3S Lipo but was interested in finding out some data for the motor as well.

I cant find any pages stating it's operating voltage or current (or turns even).
The closest I've got is a photo of a box for one that suggests 6-7.2V on the front.
Now... Were there variants, may his unit be 12V? Or were they all 7.2V
I found another page where someone states they were running theirs on 10 cells, so that would be 12V of NiCd, so maybe the unit can just take it!?!

The model has a vintage 12V car ESC (Hitec SP-1500), so bar the under voltage protection for the LiPo (which we can do with an external alarm) the ESC should handle the 3S LiPo just fine.

Any info on the engine would be appreciated?

He did wonder if it was possible to upgrade the motor to brushless, I've suggested getting the boat weight right first, then looking for a 540 drop in replacement brushless (Prob Car Motor) if it needs it. But I'd be very interested to know if anybody else has attempted to do this.

Kind Regards
Jon

Hi Jon
If replacing the brush motor going on the specs a 1000-1300kv brushless on 3S(11.1 volts) Lipo battery would be a good replacement.
The brushless motors a far more powerful that the brush motors.
The first one I installed was in a rc buggy and it went for quick to insane(540S to a trackstar 17T 2400kv).
The 3S 2650mah Lipo 30C batteries are about the same size and weight as a 7.2 volt NiCad pack and you get far longer running.
What size prop is on the outboard, it looks to be about 30-32mm?

Can't comment on the motor as never had one but these things are currently going up in value for sure.

One went on eBay the other day for, IIRC, about £76 plus P&P,

Would a different prop have helped?

It needed Lots of running in to free up the bearings and gears.... better motor and better batteries and more patients than I had at the time.

Will the gearbox on the drive cope with a brushless?

Thanks for all the replies,
In the current boat I'd agree with Martin, it couldn't pull anything of anything, and that's being run at 12V!
He has a chip on one side of the prop, so a replacement is needed anyway, we'll get the hull sorted, then look at alternatives or replacement props.
From the looks of Martins picture it was a 6-7.2V motor only (assuming no variants), so 12V ought to be thrashing it, but still too much hull in the water I think.

Thanks canabus, yes 1000-1300Kv would look about right, but 3000kv is much more affordable, so may just try that and drop to 2S.

Dont know if the gearbox (it's a simple bevel gear) will be up to it, but other than selling it as is and going for an alternative, we may as well give it a go, and try to catch the pieces when it lets go! It might not though  {:-{
