Pulling Exercises
« on: June 21, 2015, 10:52:13 pm »

Bonjour,

RC model boats events such as Luisant organized by the LACMN give opportunities to meet friends and other boats.

After an exercise alone, Moulay-Idris (30 kilos) decided to compare her pulling power with electric tugs Odin (25 kilos) and Abeille (50 kilos).

To finalize the comparison, we made a little mock race for fun.

Please note that I had a little problem with my burner...  {:-{

We had good fun !  :}

The BEC from my new Mtronik ESC is too weak to power the rudder servo and other systems. I sometimes get severe voltage drops and as seen in the video the RX sometimes goes berserk. I'm going to switch to a 5V/5A standalone BEC and everything should be fine.

Bonjour Timgarrod,

I would be great if you could share with us your event, fun is so infrequent in our discipline.

Any picture or video is welcome to tell us who was playing  :-))

And never mind about the winner  ok2

Calimero's one is a very powerful (as you have seen it) Power 1000 and Abeille has a

Several years ago we set up a grounded barge pull.
The barge started at about 18.8kg, and all the tugs pulled additinal weight till they
couldn't free the barge. We reached 29.2kg before everyone called "no joy".
The barge was also sinking once it was free.  %)
Small tugs could use shallow water, and were able to walk the barge free and
kept pace with the larger more powerful tugs.

Hello

So Funny Raphaël  :-))  By the way there are technical issues which distorts slighty the game like an unstadinessto stay in line for exh tug especilly because of wrong towing point and short line.

In the real life to avoid this tugs make contest on pushing way

It's simplest to stay in line and there is no more flow influence to imbalance the other tug

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TVXing_JrE

On RC life, to be sure both tugs stay in line during pushing, it's easy to make like a small barge with a piece of styrofoam with "V" cutting on each end to place the bow of the tugs

Hun hun Caliméro, you look like to be the more powerfull "parisian" ! I'm looking forward for the Towing Day in Normandy (22th of August)

I might have to upgrade to a big nice brass propeller with a brushless motor though. Just to be safe.  <*<

I think you should also have a race, like they have in Seattle:

I would have had to sneak up and reprogram your ESCs to restrict throttle to 25%.  8)

ESCs restristed to 25%    hummm Guillaume .... le vers est dans le fruit !

@ cyberbob, I like this race in Seattle, thinks for the link - I'm working actually on a model of the Hunter

I heard that this sentence has been removed when the Hunter arrived in Valdez ... what a pity.

@ Caliméro  : nice to see this race, the tug in the middle is disavantaged because of a WAFI !  (wind Assisted "xxxxx" Idiot - an acronym learned when I was sailling aboard the HMS ... beep...)

It's a pretty coveted title.

I was impressed with the dancing tugboat video Martin posted - those captains know what they are doing.  I tried to find a video of West Coast dancing tugboats - I think they called it dozer boat ballet.  It was synchronized dozer boats (also known as boom boats, sidewinders, log broncos etc.).  i remember seeing it on TV as a kid, but any internet searches are coming up blank.

Looks like like you guys have a lot of fun on the water.

Have you a build thread on the hunter?

Bonjour,

To all, thank you for all these videos, real tugs are really impressive, in terms of power or manouverability.

Xtian, we missed you at Massy, last year was so funny :  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zEwhq29De4

Next time, I will use your option, even if I fear that will not help me for winning... Perhaps with 5 bars if the safety steam valve and the gas attenuator allow it ? Or with my tug Jan : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqrJScYCvXA ?

And I am sure that lot of us would like to see your Hunter tug
:-))  (and I do nt speak about your ice breaker).

PS : Please note that several boats navigate with their great bulwarks ("grand pavois" for connoisseurs  ;)
