Models by design, ....... Springer/pusher ...... Super little thing, solid, simple to make, unsinkable, just add electrics and prop etc, I am sure many club members would help out with such for free or a reasonable price. We use ours (hembc) as a fun boat for visitors especially the younger  ones! Google the company and see for yourself!!!

have you thought about buying him a kit and doing it as a 'father son' project? it will be more father trust me!

if that sounds something up your ally, have look at the aeronaut kits some are around your price tag.

http://www.puffinmodels.com/product.php?prod=1763 its pretty easy to build, hulls a little tricky to bend the bow in but rest is easy enough

or if that sounding a bit to much work maybe something vac formed just glue the parts together like an airfix kit..

or a speed boat, kids love speed boats. try the club 500 its in 3 parts you can't go wrong, i built one in 2 hours! and it don't even need painting

A simple tug like a springer, or a fast electric.  Those two are great kid boats, as they are funner to drive.

Second the kit, if you have the time to spare.  One of my greatest memories of me as a child was building an rc tugboat with my Dad.

The kits come in all sorts of skill levels, so it should be fairly easy to find one that suits skill/time available.

How old is the boy?

If he is old enough to control a bit of speed and just wants to blast around the water, then a Club 500 is another option.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UEkXnUUDrg comes in kit form and from what I have seen they are very robust.

Up here if the plank had a pointy end  it was considered "super scale" :o

I think you lot have scared the poor guy away, you rascals!  >>:-(
I have the impression that £60 might have been the total budget, in which case a Chinese RTR is about the only thing that will fit the bill. Shame if so, because those things are no proper introduction to the hobby; they're just "throw-it-away-when-it-fails" toys.

The Tug510  from Model slipways I would have thought would be a great introduction, not sure however if they are still in production but worth checking out.

Does require some construction , but could be done in a day.

However if wanting a ready to run then perhaps a visit to many of the Shows arounf the country, most have a sales table and some good bargains usually.
