Thinking of getting a Deans marine HMS Zulu or Nubian
« on: July 04, 2015, 10:40:25 am »

Hi all, been away from the building lark for a year or so, & decided it's time to get back into it  :embarrassed:  As mentioned in the subject I was thinking of getting one of these & doing it as HMS Eskimo, as my brother served on her in the 70's.
I was just wondering if anyone here has built one before, & what did they think of it as a build etc ?
As always any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Cheers & good to be back Dan.

I built her many moons ago over a Christmas.
Single shaft with a 550 motor on 6 volts and she went well.
I do think the kit has been revamped since the one I built, but just take heed of the usual Deans comments.
I am not a great lover of photo etched stanchions so used James Lane's ones.

There is a build thread for one of these on  Deansmarine's own forum by Radio Joe.

I built Nubian a few years ago, the kit was not without its issues, however it made a good kit. Stability was an issue but was easily resolved by redistributing the ballast.

Hi chaps thanks for the replies  :-))  I think I'll give it ago, brother will be please if nowt else  {-)  Great pictures Deadbeat, it looks cracking !! yes I'd read that it needs plenty of ballast.
Well I guess I'd better get ordering & I'll start a build thread, & hopefully finish this one  :embarrassed: :embarrassed: Cheers Dan.

It was the distribution of the ballast that was critical. I origanlly placed everything, motor, 7.2v battery pack, ESC, rudder servo on the centre line, seemed simple to me being a single shaft ship. However, the transverse stability was awful so I put fishing weights in each bilge port and Stbd as wide apart as I coud get them and that cured it.

If you are aware of that problem earlier than I was you may be able to take it into account in planning the internal layout. One other solution would be to run on two battery packs placed side by side that would give you the stability as well.

Yes that's worth remembering  :-))  I'll see if I can put some weights or similar in before I put the decks on etc. I'll probably drop you a few lines during the build for some advice !! Cheers Dan.

Hi Dan, yes I'd agree with Deadbeat, My Zulu has some side ballast, I run on two nimh batteries side by side amidships the built in
battery box leaves a "pocket" each side which proved ideal for stabilizing/trimming ballast, and also helps to dampen out the start up torque you can get with a long slim vessel with a single motor,  once trimmed she sails very well, the single prop and rudder make her very responsive, as Deadbeat said the kit has a few issues but nothing to worry about if you take it slow and assess each piece before you cut it out, I've logged each issue in my build log, hope you enjoy your build as much as I did.  :-))

Eskimo entering Portsmouth for the first time after commissioning at JS Whites yard in Cowes IOW.
One of the best ships I served in.

She looks a lot like a cruiser with that raised central section. Lovely lines Dan, that will be a gorgeous model when completed. I am sure your brother will be impressed and will want to con her.

Thanks for all the responses  :-)  I'm looking forward to starting now. Nice Pic Ned, I'll have to ask my brother to raid his old photo albums for any close ups he has of her. Will have to get a 1/96th Wasp too  :-))  Cheers Dan.

Shapeways has a Wasp in 1:96th. Its about £25 but would save you lots of whittling.

Well done Dan.  An excellent decision (having several Dean's ships myself.)
We all look forward to the start of your build log, which I am sure we will all support and encourage  :-))
