Land Yacht HobbyKing BAT 1
« on: July 06, 2015, 01:21:39 am »

Anyone ran a Land Yacht before?!?
Nope, nor me but I now have a HobbyKing BAT1 for review!

http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__76855__HobbyKing_8482_Bat_1_RC_Land_Yacht_ARR_AR_Warehouse_.html

NB. I also met Stuart Warne, who does lots of HobbyKing YouTube video.  It was a bit weird as I heard him talking to someone behind me,
recognized his voice, turned around and was sort-of surprised not top see a Youtube window around him!!!

Ordered one a few days ago - should arrive very soon (I hope!).  What are your initial impressions?  Any problems?  (And it looks like you stayed up really late putting it together.)  If it's as quick as it looks the main problem is going to be finding a space big enough  :}

Hi Guys

Would think that the beach would be a good place, unless you have a disused runway, those things can go like hell in the right conditions

These guys had a plan on their Web Site a while back for one made out of Plumbing Pipes and fittings, called a Polypipe Land Yacht, try Googling it.

Crickey Greg has the weed in our lake got that bad,  %% %% %)

Well, it's good to be prepared for any eventuality!  :-))

The Bat arrived today.  Looks a nice piece of kit, carbon mast and boom and main axle, nice bearings for the wheels.  But a few questions for anyone who has one or knows about it -
1.  How is the boom attached to the mast?
2.  What is that short piece of tube taped under the hatch for?
3.  And what is the cocktail stick for?  (Yes, really!)

As you might have gathered, the instructions leave a little to be desired - or maybe I am just being thick  %%  Still, I should be able to get it running soon, and will report on performance.

(How's yours coming along Martin?)

Greg in Ans to your question No 1 it looks like it is held on by a plastic bracket.....just been looking at the pics Martin put up
Question 3.....ANS it is to do with the attatchment of the boom to mast....have a look at the picks on the Hobbykong site and all will be revealed

Greg, the boom/mast joint seems to be a couple of pieces polythene a stud and a small bit of dowel, which to me doesn't seem to match the engineering of the rest of the craft, I bet you come up with something better,  :-))

Thanks for the picture interpretation guys - yes, I think Joe is right - there is no actual connection between boom and mast, just some soft tabs that encircle mast and boom - and I guess that cocktail stick is to hold the tab in place on the boom.  And yes, I'll probably come up with something a little more secure!  :-))

I thought I would give the Bat a go straight from the box, so put it together with the stuff Hobby King provides.  The boom was held to the tack of the sail with the cocktail stick and the small rubber band supplied held the clew of the sail to the end of the boom, hooked around the small screw that HK supply in place.  Nothing putting any tension on the sail luff, no connection between boom and mast, no boom vang.....  %%

It was pretty breezy here today, a bit too much if truth be told, but off I went.  The Bat certainly takes off  in the puffs and goes a lot quicker than I can run!   :embarrassed:  It also stops unless the surface is flat and hard.  Even a thin layer of soft sand over the roadway stopped it.  But the rig was a big disappointment.  Even sheeted in hard the sail never set properly and as soon as the sheet was eased the boom rose and the top half of the sail flapped.   >:-o

So - lots of potential but some work needed on the rig, which I have started.  And yes, it did flip over several times in the gusts, and you need pretty swift reactions to keep the wheels on the ground.  A more efficient rig might improve this as it should be possible to feather it more easily.  Time will tell!

Thanks TT.  That shows pretty much how I put it together, and some of the other videos on that page are worth a look too.

I got the kit version rather than the plug and sail, so fitted my own servos which was pretty straightforward.  (You do need to supply one extra small screw to fit the sail arm to the servo arm.)  One hint I offer for anyone assembling a Bat - the instructions say place the receiver to starboard and the batteries to port in the space behind the servos.  If you do that the batteries will foul the on-off switch.  Put the batteries to starboard and all is fine.

Hello,

When my Sons where in their teens I made them a Land Yacht.
Set up correctly  they really do go very fast !.
A Member said 'unless you have a disused runway' - - well at the time, we DID !!!.
The runway now lies under the M62 Motorway.
We waited until there was a correct wind, and set the Yacht up on the runway, in front of the car -- and let it go !!.
Gave it some distance in front of us, and belted after it.
Just under 35 mph !!!!!!, no effort, more wind, I am sure it would have gone a lot faster.
My Sons were screaming with delight - - and me !!.

John.  :-))  :-))  :-))

I brought the PNP version as i got it at almost the same price as the kit when they offered me a discounted rate, it also works out a little cheaper to get that version when you add the price of 2 reasonably decent futaba servos to the 'kit', not sure on the quality of them but for the price you can't really knock it.

Not sure if anyone is interested but just in case...

Here's what I did to the rig to try and improve things a bit.  There was no room for a conventional boom vang to keep the boom level, so I went for a windsurfer-style wishbone arrangement.  All bashed together out of whatever I had to hand, so it's a bit rough and ready, but if it works OK I can tart it up a bit later.

Here's a general view of the result -

The piece that slides on the mast and the piece at the end of the boom are small lumps of oak, and the 1/8" dowels are, I think, walnut from heaven knows where.  Thin carbon rod would be more in keeping!

I held the tack of the sail down with the supplied rubber band and a small screw in the back of the mast.

(The messy glue around the mast is from an earlier attempt to fix the boom to the mast.)

The whole rig looks and feels much more like it should (or at least how I think it should) but I haven't actually tried it yet.  I'll let you know how it performs when I have had a test run.

(Come on Martin, where's yours??)

The Hatch is held down by a magnet, which isn't glued in place, well the top half isn't?!?!
Dab of Hot Glue, job done.

So far so good, where am I going to put the radio?
I decide to be a smart ar5e clever and Velcro the Receiver (Rx)  to the hatch & run the aerials inside the hull top!

Re: HobbyKing BAT1 - Steering
« Reply #21 on: July 16, 2015, 05:39:19 pm »

I then notice the steering snake / outer / rod was loose, so more Hot Glue.
I also Hot Glued the snake down the hull to the front as it was only bonded at the servo end.
The steering got quite stiff after that so a few drops of Teflon oil soon loosed it up nicely.

The front wheel, steering arm and mount is quite substantial... but I hot glued that in too anyway!
The steering clevis was none to clever, that will need keeping an eye on...

Stepping back a bit, I would be using the Turnigy TGY-i6, 'all signing, all dancing' 2.4GHz (Gig) radio.
http://www.hobbyking.co.uk/hobbyking/store/__62710__Turnigy_TGY_i6_AFHDS_Transmitter_and_6CH_Receiver_Mode_2_.html
(anther computer radio to learn.... )

It has a good "feel" to it and runs on 4 AA batteries.
