Re: HobbyKing BAT1 - Battery or batteries?
« Reply #25 on: July 16, 2015, 06:06:37 pm »

The kit is supplied with one of those spring type battery holders which takes 4 AA batteries.
At this stage I will state my personal preference for a 'flat pack', pre-welded battery pack.
( I've had several failures of spring-type battery holders in the past, splitting, corrosion,  bad joints, percussive failures, etc, etc. )
.... just don't like them at ALL!

But as it came in the kit I've use it anyway.
You Velcro it down wherever you want it.

It's only after I've fitted the battery holder and the Rx, that I then test fit the upper deck.
... It doesn't fit, there isn't enough room above the batteries for the Rx or servo plugs.
Another shuffle around but now the servo leads aren't long enough.
The battery holder ends up against the sail servo which should stop the batteries flying out in case of an emergency stop (crash!)

The Bat 1 comes with battery holder & Hull mounted switch (with leads).

Time to set up and test the radio.
Read the instructions:
1. Plug 'Bind plug' into [B/VCC] (channel 7)
2. plug batteries into any other channel
3. Power up the RX - Fast flashing LED.
4. Power up Tx whilst holding Tx's  'Bind' button.
5. Confirmation chirp from Tx.
6. Rx flashes slowly.

........ however, spot my deliberate mistake!   >>:-(

The clevis on the steering needs a length of silicone fuel tubing fitted over it to keep it closed. If you dont have any then you can use heat shrink tubing.

The battery box lead is unkeyed two pin plug, the power switch is standard 3 pin (servo) socket.....

That battery box is dead now, it can't hurt me any more....  <:(

Order a new Rx and back to plan A, with a proper battery pack!
A dab of Hot Glue to keep the servo leads out of the way.

Even the best make a small mistake now and then Martin!  But I reckon you just had it in for that poor little battery pack   {:-{

I had to enlarge the hole in the hull at the front where the steering rod emerges.  I filed it wider in both directions to save the rod having to bend too much on max lock.  I also fitted my servos and found you had to do the fixing screws pretty tight to stop the servos moving - might be worth checking yours to make sure they aren't going to shift.

Nice thorough review - looking forward to the rest.

Thought for the day:
When Hot Glue sticks to fingers, it's painful at first then nothing afterwards...... Superglue is the other way round!

OK new Rx? - Check!
Battery pack? - Check!
Radio instruction booklet? - Check!
Tx & batteries? - Check!
Bind plug? - Check!
Everything connected up CORRECTLY? - Check!

Before I set about binding the new Rx, I thought I have a play with the Transmitter (Tx).
I has loads of aero type features most of which i'll never need but a few will come in use on later projects, eg. V tail mix, servo limit & extend, etc, etc.

I thought I'd set up the model name first... Easy!
2 hours later I'm left scratching my head and getting splinters for my efforts!

See if you can make heads nor tails from this?!?!

Hey, that's one really busy CANCEL key!

Could it be a matter of 'Press the CANCEL key once to' do one action and 'Press the CANCEL key twice to' do the other action?

n.b. this FREE advice is worth just what you paid for it. ;) - Tom

Close Tom!

Eventually, I figured it out, 3. should read;

3.  A LONG Press on the "Cancel" key will exit and save the new parameters.

Binding was a breeze... maybe I was being Extra Careful this time!!

Fast flashing LED then Slow once Bound / Binded (?!?)
( I've eased the 'case' back a bit here for clarity. )

Re: BAT1 - mast .... base? .....seat? .... mast step? ...tabernacle?
« Reply #47 on: July 17, 2015, 11:39:37 pm »

I've read that some people have adjusted keratin aspect of the mechanic setup of the servos, winch arm, steering rod, clevis, etc. etc.
..... I'll do all that after the first run!  Just make sure that everything it tightened down and secure before rejoining the hull halves.

I had also hot glued the sail mast .... base? .....seat? .... mast step? ...tabernacle?  - as this is a high stress point.

I got something wrong as the two halves wouldn't join again properly for love nor money!
I went round to PD's and eventually we figured out that the Hot Glue had started to cool before I got the Mast Base properly in place.
..... cut it all off again and Hot glue a 2nd time with a bit more speed rather than haste!
( NB: Careful of orientation, although it can only be fitted one way round. )

Re: BAT1 - Hull screws
« Reply #49 on: July 18, 2015, 12:06:29 am »

Everything in place tested and working, time to screw the two hull halves back together, 5 screws

My usual practice with machine thread screws is to borrow some of SWMBO or daughters nail varnish to use as a thread lock.
( It holds quite tightly but then 'snaps' clean if needs be. )
