Yes, boom vang = kicking strap, or any device to ensure the boom swings horizontally but doesn't rise into the air.  You can see in a couple of your photos Martin that the sail is billowing out as the boom lifts when the sheet is let out.  Ideally, the leech of the sail (the back edge) should be fairly straight whether the boom is sheeted hard in or let fully out.  The sail should swing more like a door than a billowing tent!  Conventionally, the vang is fitted from the underside of the boom down to the foot of the mast - you can see it on most model yachts, forming a triangle with the mast and boom - but with this rig there isn't room for that, so I made the wishbone thing I showed earlier.  It would also be nice to have a proper gooseneck joining the boom to the mast, but that isn't so critical.  If anyone else wants to chip in with any ideas, feel free  :-))

It's been just a little bit breezy around here of late and I haven't run my Bat since I made the mods, so I can't yet offer any views on how well it goes.  Maybe next week.

 Afternoon all!

A couple of things came out of the first run that all you yachtsmen can help me with:

1. Simple DIY "gooseneck" joint for the mast.
(bearing in mind the minimal boom mast gap, about 8mm)

2. A way of detaching the the 'outhaul' to the 'clew' in the boom for storage and transport.
(bearing in mind the minimal boom / deck gap, about 10mm)

Hi Martin,
Super simple approach to your gooseneck could be tiny screw in hooks and eyes from the local DIY emporium,
epoxy short lengths of dowel into the mast and boom to give the screw something to bite into, popular on toy yachts etc.

Or 'binding' a fitting (ali right angle with a bolt pivot through it etc) to the mast with strong thread,
apply a coating of epoxy or varnish to beef it up and protect it - simple method of attaching items.
I have taken this a stage further using ball links for the gooseneck and kicker,
both are screwed into threaded holes in a piece of ali bar, this is then bound to the mast and filled and painted over,
see below photo - might spark off an idea !

Attaching lines to booms etc ? have a look at pictures of the smaller model yachts RG65 & 1 metres etc,
tight fitting rubber grommets pushed onto the boom with the line tied through or around the grommet gives an attachment,
then sliding the grommet along the boom gives sail adjustment.

Fishing tackle shops can also be a good source of model yacht fittings -
the little wire clips in the photo are fishing products I use to attach my lines etc, easily detachable for transport.

Hope this is food for thought and where's the action movie we are all itching to see !

regards Paul

Case of Delhi belly last week stopped play with the BAT-1.... don't worry, I've disinfected the Forum now!

I've been pondering the Gooseneck thing for ages now, various options seemed viable.

Brass tubing and pin Gooseneck.
Couple of ball races around the mast wrapped with thin Aluminum sheet.
A smaller windsurfer type kicking strap ( like SailorGreg )
A RC car type steering ball joint
A commercial unit.

Anyway I thought I'd go round to PD's to see what we could knock up ourselves.

Various ideas came to mind.

A slotted pen body or a Split pin.... but which to try?1

Well I've been ready to go for 3 days now but it seems the best cure for wind (weather type!) is build yourself a land yacht and that'll calm the weather down for a week!  >:-o

Smileys. Oh, should've thought of that (seeing as I work in the computer industry!)

So it's Microsoft Edge that's the problem. I miss my smileys!

STILL not had another chance to run the BAT due to my lack of wind!
( There are several people that will vehemently dispute that fact! )

In case you have one, HobbyKing are now advertising a list of available spare parts:

That list of spares is interesting - unless the prices given are wrong, you can get a whole BAT  (less servos etc) for a little over thirty quid!  That's a lot cheaper than buying the boxed product!   (Yes, I know there will be a bit of P&P but even so.... )

Or am I missing something here?

Oh, and like Martin, the weather has kept my BAT grounded (moored? parked?).  That and some recent personal maintenance work courtesy of the NHS.  But soon, real soon...

So...if you rub it, does the magic wind genie appear?

I normally rub to try and get rid of the wind. Gaviscon does a good job too.

Really intrigued to see what the spatula is for.
It'll be a flying helmet and wet celery next!
