Old Whale back RAF Rescue Launch
« on: July 25, 2015, 10:09:38 am »

I saw this the other day, looks suspiciously like an old RAF rescue launch converted into a house boat. Not long been there, so hopefully some ones looking into restoring her  :-))  Also what looks like an old Fairmile fast motor launch with the No 357 painted on the stern behind the other boats, but I couldn't get a shot of her  {:-{

Yes that's a possibility, I just thought the stern reminded me of my rescue launch I started  :-)

I can see the resemblance of the stern but the bow does'nt appear to have the sweeping curved deckline of a whaleback but it is very difficult to tell from the pix. Well spotted though. The coastal craft are'nt as popular with modellers as they used to be, a shame really. The whaleback makes a good looking model. Good luck with your build.  :-))

BPB 68ft H&D HSL "Calypso" ex Pentalina ex HSL2677.

ML 357 is a Fairmile B called "Jamaican Moon".

Well spotted Christan. So the hull is a BPB 'Hants and Dorset' HSL - the forerunner of the post war Vosper RTTL. The hull lines of these two boat types appear to me to be near identical, especially at the chine lines/bow.

Happy to help, researching the post-war fates of these boats is another hobby.

Click here to see loads of good pics of the Fairmile and scroll down to see Calypso in her barge while hull repairs were being done.
