1947 British Cargo Liner 32'=1"
« on: August 01, 2015, 08:39:27 am »

I have just started a 1947 vintage cargo liner, Length  509 feet, at a scale of 32 feet to 1 inch.       It is to be entirely scratchbuilt.    The hull is wood.   Accommodation will be wood faced with plasticard.    Deck machinery turned brass, masts and derricks brass tube, rod, copper rod, silver steel rod.   Rigging fine copper wire.    It looks a bit rough at the moment, but they always do at this stage.

I love the style of ship, and I'm sure you will do it justice as usual, Bob.

I'm constantly amazed with your models. How you can get so much detail at such a tiny scale, I struggle at 1/72nd.

Thanks for replies and comments.    It is not all that difficult really, as they are so small that I do not have to bother with fiddly knots, door handles, ringbolts and a host of tiny details that would be invisible at these scales.     The rigging is just short lengths of wire straightened and stuck on with glue.
Bob
PS.   I made a mistake in the title, the ship was completed in 1947, not 1948!

If you buy Bob's excellent self published book all is revealed! There is a review in the October issue of Model Boats magazine. Well worth the £14.99+ postage.

After smoothing it looks a lot better.     Actually, I have moved along a bit further than this, but have not photographed it yet.    Yesterday, I fitted the bulwarks, planked poop deck top. steel/planked 'midships deck and steel forecastle deck.

Fascinating to see the transformation from
a couple of blocks of wood to a fine vessel.

It isn't all that small though - it is sixteen inches long!     I haven't the energy or patience to build large models.

I have now added the plating round the bridge front and down the sides, so it is now looking a lot neater.    The plating was made from white plasticard and was quite difficult to get right because of the cut-out on the lower bridge front.

Brilliant work Bob. Lots of elbow grease has resulted in a glass smooth hull:O)

I really do recommend getting Bob's new book. It is a real eye opener on his techniques and how his models are built. People tend to shy away from 'miniatures' but in truth these models are not all that small but they do lend themselves to some very ingenious construction methods that are well within the scope of any half way competent modeller. You can build them on the dining room table and the cost of materials is next to nothing so what's not to like?

Most of us approach our modelling on a mechanistic basis in that we try to reproduce the original at a fairly large scale. Once you enter the world of Bob's models you are using 'artistic' techniques to simulate detail such as using thin wire for rigging. This is both remarkably effective and remarkably easy and the finished model will sit proudly on the mantelpiece which will usually be tolerated by your better half.

I have found some of Bob's techniques to be effective at larger scales too, for example funnel support guy wires are much more realistic when made of wire compared with using thin thread and knots.

Even after over 50 year's modelling I have found some really interesting stuff in Bob's book to improve my own work so I make no apology for plugging it!

Thanks for replies,
Martin, Peter, if you click on the Globe to the left, it will take you to my website with details and sample pages.     Having failed to find a conventional publisher, I "bit the bullet" and paid for publication myself.      Surprisingly easy.    Sent it to the printers by e-mail, and received the books ten days later,    Published 7th May this year, and has been reprinted twice since then.    Postage to Australia is rather high (£10), but there is a download version for considerably less.

Hull.
The hull isn't glossy at all!    It was plated with paper strips (writing paper).     The white of the raised forecastle, and poop decks was white matt primer from Halford's (Spray cans).    The red underwater was red oxide matt primer, also sprayed on.     The black area was hand-painted using matt acrylic artists paint (Chromacolour)      The white line was cut from a long piece of white paper, and stuck on.

Thanks Peter,
The beauty of a download is that it is very easy to print the plans, also just the section you are studying at the time.
At the moment, I am making the bridge section of the Arabia.

Good point, Bob.

I have had a quick skim through and it looks fascinating, well explained and illustrated with lots of helpful tips. We are away in Queensland in our caravan at present, so I'll have plenty of time to explore the book more thoroughly over the next 4 weeks.

Bob, I have changed the date in the topic title from 1948 to 1947, as you outlined in reply #3.

Peter,
Thanks for correcting date.      I have made some more progress with the construction of the bridge section.    It was more complicated than most, and took three hours, spread over yesterday!
It should start looking a lot better when I get the bridge windows in, and start on the finer details.
It is always a source of amazement to me  that so few modelmakers like this era of shipbuilding.      I feel that between 1945 and about 1965, some of the most beautiful steam and motor ships ever to sail the seas were produced in shipyards all over the world.

- I visited Queensland (Weipa) in 1977 aboard the bulk carrier Silverdon, where we loaded bauxite ore for Japan.     We had the most exquisite passage through the beautiful Great Barrier Reef from Sydney, through the Torres Strait and down to Queensland!
