She's a fine ship, Bob, and well up to your usual standard!

Thanks,
I have put in quite a lot of work today, the tedious job of adding the side stanchions, windows and the engine-room casing on the boat deck.     Took me 3.5 hours.

Fun...I'm trying to work out the catheads...the tiny pieces necessary have an evil habit of going 'ping' from the tweezers into the nearest black hole... I guess things like that and stanchions are to stop us thinking we've got it totally sorted :)

I usually make more than I need for that very reason!  O0    Quite a few stanchions "pinged" away into oblivion today!  :((

Bob, I totally agree with your statement regarding ships of the 1945-65 era. The attached photo is one I took of part of Sydney harbour in 1963. It was taken from the footpath of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and shows the finger wharves in the Hickson Road area, with ships berthed at many of them. Those familiar with shipping company colours would probably recognise some of the funnels. Sydney Harbour is no longer a working harbour in the true sense as most of the heavy maritime traffic consists of cruise ships. Cargo is now mostly containerised with the terminals located in Port Botany, and it would be rare to see a cargo ship in the harbour.  This was done to keep heavy road traffic out of the city itself.

The buildings at the wharves shown in the photo are used for a variety of purposes now, including the Sydney Theatre Company. It's a far cry from the days when they would have been a hive of activity with cargo being loaded and unloaded from ships from all over the world.

Interesting things we see in photographs Peter

I have marked up the following image for our Northern neighbours

1 = your vantage point on the Sydney harbour bridge
2 = an Oberon Class submarine of our RAN......as shown below in the O
3 = HMAS Waterhen......but was not the Sub base but a Patrol base
4 = HMAS Platypus........which was the Sub base in the 60's & 70's
5 = my work place @ Garden Island dockyard

Thanks for interesting photographs.    I first called at Sydney on my first trip to sea in 1961 in the old Rhodesia Star (built in 1943).    All the Australian ports were full of ships at that time.   I also docked at Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Newcastle, Portland, Geelong and Weipa.     Happy days!     :-)

A lot more progress has been made today with the fitting of the funnel, and the construction and fitting of the six hatches.   As soon as the main deck structures are in place (poop deckhouse and masthouses), I will break from the model for a while to complete the display case, base and carrying case.

I certainly would, and how you do that very realistic sea, too.

Peter,
The sea techniques are described on pages 79 to 81 of the download.
I just make the sea, my wife paints it!

Thanks, Bob, I obviously hadn't read that far :embarrassed:  You're lucky to have an artistic wife, mine's a great cook, good at needlework but, unfortunately, is no artist.

All the major deck structures are now in place, and it is ready for the finer details.

Six lifeboats have now been made and fitted, also some ventilators.     The samson posts have been cut to length, but have not yet had their tops fitted.

I have been busy making the display case over the past few days, but it is now complete.     Progress has resumed on the ship with some details on the forecastle head, four cargo winches and the warping winch on the poop.   The compass platform surround has been fitted on top of the bridge, and the gangways have been fitted on the sides of the accommodation.   All the guard rails have been made, but not yet fitted.

This one is getting a bit tedious now, and I will be glad when it is completed.   I have fitted all the guardrails and all the many cargo winches, plus a number of ventilators etc.

It is looking really good now
Just waiting for the rigging to bring it to life.

Thanks,
When I get to the rigging, it will nearly be complete.   Rigging a steamer is dead easy - can do it in less than a day! :-))

Thanks, but I don't have much patience!        I have only spent 58 hours so far building this, and that includes the display case.     It is coming close to completion now, but I am getting a bit tired of it now!
I could never spend months or years building models like some do!

I have done some more now, and it is almost ready for masting and rigging.   I still have to fit names and port of registry, skylights, themotank units, mooring bits, propellers, rudder, davits, lifebelt lockers.

Although it doesn't look a lot different, quite a lot of fine detail has gone on since the last image, and it is now ready for masting and rigging
