SOLD!
« on: August 03, 2015, 04:51:49 pm »

Another North Sea stalwart sold off. This time to a Venezuelan company to operate in the South Atlantic/Pacific region.

This photo got me wondering though. Surely it must be cheaper to actually sail it down there under its own power rather than using a semi submersible for transport? Does anyone know why its done this way?

Don't have a clue really - but perhaps it's cheaper to go piggy back. I'm thinking mainly of stuff like paying a crew, putting them up in hotels at the other end and then flying them back home if there's nothing to bring back by sea.

Another guess would be something to do with insurance cover ?

I reckon there will be some on here who can enlighten us though...

Regards,

Ray.

Must be cheaper or they wouldn't do it , can't be faster as I doubt the semi-sub goes over 14knts loaded up , guessing the semi-sub uses a lot less fuel for the trip along with a smaller crew so works out cheaper than sailing her down by herself.

The semi-sub might be picking up a more valuable ship/oil rig for the return journey and instead of sailing down empty offered a heavily discounted rate.

More likely the fuel capacity of the smaller vessel is insufficient to travel all the way across the pond to the nearest port before travelling down the east coast, filling up as she goes

Or the vessel is out of class so can't be sailed until it's back in class and it's cheaper to dock her at the new owners country or else where.

All the vessels certificates, class surveys etc, they are all renewed roughly every two and a half years. There is inspections of the hull, steel work, the engines are looked at, the generators too, the main shaft(s), prop(s). If a vessel is out of class, it a lot of work to put it back.

That depends on which classification society the owners are registered with.

Well it left Holland with new topside paint, because it has the new owners logo and ship name on the bow, as can be seen in the photo's. So I would imagine some work has been carried out on her before shipment.

It was just my view on why it might be carried on a heavy lift.

The carrier went of A in B vacuous

The parcel went of A in B with a crew

It is necessary to pay the crew of A in B and to repatriate the crew of B in A it needs to pay the fuel, the food of A in B

Calculate the economy if you negotiate with the carrier
