I've not seen these things launched before Ned. I take it they are not supposed to do that?  I'm thinking if this is the result from 30-40 feet, what's it going to be like dropping from 200ft off a oil platform!

By the amount of buoyancy I would assume that only the
Coxswain/Helsman was aboard.
Oil platform ones go down on wires don't they?

That's film of the world record one at 60m , erm no thanks be like getting into a car with a 4 point racing harness , accelerating to 40mph then slamming it into a concrete wall , yes you will survive the drop BUT I'd bet you will be injured ( better that than dead though to be honest )

That's impressive Davie, and shows how they should enter the water. I wonder if they used crash test dummise in it to measure things like impact, G force etc.

From the Titanic with not enough boats for the people on board to this crazy nonsense! We had a surveyor wanted to test the boats by emergency release 1 metre above the water. 3 months before 3 crew received severe spinal injuries dropping 50 cm. I said I'd do it if he came in the boat with me. He refused. I told him where to shove his test. He said no test no certificate. I refused To do the test. Company super went mental. Eventually we got the certificate without the test.
I would never sail on any vessel with this type of lifeboat.
Jerry.

Most of the modern ships coming into the Mersey are fitted out with these, dont forget the crews on these are minimum required , they wont fit boats to each side these day's (if the ship list's, one side is U/S )  I think the seat's face backwards & absorb the initial impact . . . the first vid' looked to be lightly loaded , hence the back flip , even so the door was opened . . . I'd have been impressed if he'd started the motors & sailed it back  O0

Think they normally put weighted sacks into the seats for testing ( which is what they obviously didn't do in the first one that did the 360 !! ) , must admit that even if I was fit enough to sail on a big enough ship that carried these I'd rather throw the inflatable raft over the side and take my chance in that than get crippled going into the sea in one of these

When you consider that when they drop from an oil platform   it may be into burning oil a 360 when you are strapped in a padded seat isin't to bad. You could probably go through worse at some roller coaster rides.

Lifeboat  drills are one of the biggest causes of deaths and injuries at sea. The more accidents there are the less crew want to take part, the less skilled they become and the more accident happen. Vicious circle!
