I've decided to make the watertight main section out of glass fiber, too. Attaching the deck to a plexiglas tube works, I've tried it successfully. But one has to fill the transition with filler and that is a) an annoying work and b) the result is, compared to the exact and sharp lines of the bow and stern, sub standard. So I have prepared the respective CAD files and ordered the milling of the preforms......

No, no gpr tube. The whole middle section is going to be one piece made out of glass fiber. Pretty much like that...

This is how it's going to be. I can minimize the additional volume of the deck by making a trench in the structure that will be free flooding. The trench will also enable the flooding of the sail and it will connect the free flooding stern and bow sections. The photo-etched brass deck will get cuts that help venting the trench. The bridge structures help to ensure that the deck does not bend. The remaining left and right bump of the deck superstructure will be filled e.g. with resin and microballoons. This makes it possible to lay down the glass fiber in an almost perfect circular shape, restoring the full strength of a tube structure.

While waiting for the milled parts for the middle section I started gluing the prop shafts, the bayonet catch, the rudder bearings into the stern section.  Here some pics.  I'm currently reworking the photo etched deck but version one already fits quite perfectly.....

Still waiting for the new milled parts. So on with small stuff:

PU cast parts - masts and anchor:

Sail: milled to the right size and filled inside:

Bridge assembly:

Bridge in the sail:

And that's how it's going to be:

O.K., moulds for the middle section are done. Will let them sit for the better part of next week at decent temperature so that everything fully sets.....

Roughly put together....nevertheless, it starts to look like a boat:

Just snapped together the support frame. 750 ml Engel tank, 12V, with Hall sensor and compact control unit. Makes the thing controllable like a servo.  In the front: 4 x LiFePo

One also can nicely see the v-shape of the stern bulkhead:

O.K, assembled the watertight motor feedthrough.

The parts:

Ball bearing installed:

Seal installed:

Motor fastened to the motor flange:

Drive shaft installed:

Assemby of the whole thing:

And with the o-ring it's just one M16 nut to install the whole thing in a boat:

O.K., my notebook is fit again.  I made some progress with the boat, too:

Anchor housing:

First details on the sail:

Evened out:

Mast base light-weighted:

And glued to the sail cover:

On we go:

New decks and small brass parts; photo-etched:

Fins on the sail:

Bridge with brass deck:

Flood holes with brass grids::

Interior in the bow:

Sail windows::

More detail work. The handrail on the sail is installed. I used 0,5 mm brass railing posts. The rail itself is made of 0,3 mm steel wire.

The stern service hatch with positioning bolts:

The v-shaped stern bulkhead was aligned to the stern tubes and glued into place. The bras tubes force the bulkhead into the right position:

The technics frame then was an easy fix. M4 thread rods and nuts. The 8 mm brass tube is the feed for the piston tank:

Not too mach space in the back in the boat, but I want a linkage without play. That's my solution:

Make a flat on the side of a brass set collar and drill a hole (90° to the thread). Take a brass spherical joint and shorten it:

Solder the shperical joint into the set collar and re-drill the center hole of the set collar:

Done:

Worked allot on the sail, and some filling and grinding on the hull. Here's the current status:

The bow got its flood holes:

The sail is 90% assembled, primed and painted in its base color:

Damn! That's impressive work!  Are you farming out the machining or do you do it yourself?

The milling of the pre-forms is done by a nearby company as well as the milling of 2D structural parts. The 3D-printing stuff I get from shapeways.com

Some amazing work! Are there any plans to sell this as a kit?

I'm thinking about it. The design was optimized with respect to a possible kit. But first I have to assemble the prototype, see how good it actually is, and then I'll put together a first kit to calculate what I'd have to ask for such a boat. If that's somewhat reasonable, than one can think about it....

Welcome Andreas.......your build is certainly technically advanced in both design and also in manufacturing

I have no experience with model submarines, but see a shielded ball race on each propeller shaft drive housing complete with a shaft seal outboard of that

So are you using Grade 420 stainless steel shelled synthetic ZZ shielded ball bearings?.......... Derek
