Is it me or are..
« on: August 18, 2015, 10:29:04 am »

Crane ships just getting bigger? Yes I know the second two are cable layers but even so! These look as though they could capsize in the slightest seas.

Yes Brian, it is you!   Everyone knows that these ships have legs and walk along the sea floor!

She seems to have very good cross beam stability!

I'd think the big blue boxes built into the crane are ballast tanks so as the load comes on more water is pumped in at high pressure to the outermost area and high up in the tanks first to counteract the weight being lifted.

See a fair few oil related ships with huge cranes on them as well ( well head maintenance , etc )

^each crane good for 150t or 300t with a dual lift !!

The shape of some of the bws is very interesting ans counter intuitive to my mind, but I suppose the hydrodynamicists have done their experiments and the backwards sloping bow must be beneficial.

They do look like epic modelling projects with all the crane gubbins.

Here's one of the more well-known modern bow designs - the Ulstein X-Bow: http://www.ulstein.com/Kunder/ulstein/cms66.nsf/doc/3A6662B6DEF379B3C12576C70031E17D

Supposed to give a better ride to the bow (among other advantages), and with many of these ships having their accommodations forward, I imagine that this is popular with the crews.

An X Bow design is on the drawing board as a future build, probably about this time next year. But next up for me is a turn of the century 3 island tramp steamer.

Looks to be a lot kinder on the hull than a traditional bow ( a lot less slamming , should mean lower maintenance costs and a happier crew )

Hm, it has taken the bulb and enlarged it to become the bow, excellent. I wonder if it has applications in warships?

There are apparently X-Bow ships with a bulbous bow as well ( haven't found a photo of one yet though ) , as for warships I'd think there wouldn't be any advantage and a lot of disadvantages.

Warships tend to be as low to the water as they practically can get to avoid being see by radar and the eyes of fighter pilots so the very large forrard area these bows takes up would have the effect of saying "Yoohoo I'm here!!" lol

Hm, a shame, but then asthetics do not always influence a military design, though the Spifire was purty.

Martin, that is a monster cable :-)) I expect the builders had to make a huge set of chocks to stop it rolling out the factory and destroying a town!

This is the military's version of the X-bow, or Axe bow, with bulb for sonar.
More like a Cruiser than a Destroyer in size, it is anything but small, or pretty.  %)

We have come full circle , USS Alarm from the late 1800's and , of course , the original ram bow was developed by the Greeks !!!
