loss of range with my futaba 6ex 2.4
« on: August 19, 2015, 04:36:47 pm »

The range of my futaba 6ex has suddenly reduced to about a quarter of what it was. I have checked the receiver battery and even tried it with different fasst receivers, .The range is now down to about 50 metres. has anyone any suggestions as to what has gone wrong with my transmitter.

I've heard of the internal aerial cable issues with some Tx - do you feel comfortable opening up the back of your Tx and having a look-see?

I have read in my DX7 that it's possible to set to the range to a short distance  (for testing brown outs in the range test).   Perhaps your radio has done this.

Has anyone ever operated the Tx with the Antenna retracted? I have heard say that this can cause damage.

Not that I have one, so its theory, but the TX aerial is fed via a flexible lead.  If it has had too many flexes due to it being folded down in a tidy manner, there might be a break in there.  A 2.4GHz signal would happily hop a gap like that, but transmitted signal strength would be reduced considerably.

Welcome to Mayhem.    Just noticed your Forum name        :o

I hope it doesn't cause confusion.   Might be a good idea to use a  'Non De Plume'

Cheers

I have one of these transmitters sitting in my garage cupboard, I used it for a couple of years before I bought my 10CAP. We did some tests  around our flying club and managed to get a good signal up to 1 kilometre away, YES 1 kilometre..... It was a straight line test with the transmitter at the field and the receiver was taken to a nearby bridge. SO I think that 50 metres is way to short. Even with the transmitter in power down mode it should transmit further than that. Maybe it's a combination of poor battery and power down mode? Good luck  U2.

By the way Kenny it's 'nom de plume'  yours translates as 'not of feather' :}

I just read the instruction manual and you have to press the mode button whilst switching on the transmitter to enter power down mode so its probably not that. BUT, look on the back of the transmitter just to see if the red LED is flashing, it flashes in power down mode and could indicate some sort of short.

Check also that your antenna hasn't come unscrewed, whip the back off and look for anything obvious.  U2
